you could get a 70-200 f/4 L, 50mm f/1.8, a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, plus a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 for a combined cost of about $1500. Thats the best cost to focal length in top quality combo I can think of, being pretty complete covering wide to telephoto. Mind you no super wide or super telephoto in that combo.

Not trying to sell you on those lens just using them as a basis for a great all around lens kit and cost expectancy.
