    Hoping this is the right forum. I'm new to the photography world and really want to get into bird / nature photography. what is recommeded as intermediate SLR gear to have? Bear in mind never owned one before.

    What's your budget? Unless you are willing to really hone your 'hunting' skills to get close, wildlife photography can get very expensive.

    You would be better off starting a new thread in the Nature & Wildlife forum.

    Just about any DSLR will do the job nicely, where you will spend your money will be in the lenses. The big two (Nikon and Canon) probably have the largest selection of long lenses appropriate for birding. The shortest lens I would attempt to shoot birds with would be a 300mm, but bear in mind no lens is never long enough when it comes to birds...or that's the way it seems at least.
