Questions about the 400D being an acceptable sports/action shot camera?
Thanks,

Re: Cannon 400D/XTi, sports?, wrong section?
I think mostly it will depend on the glass you use and how fast it is but I'm not an action photographer nor an xti owner. I do know that people do use it for action/sports but don't know what lenses they are using.

Re: Cannon 400D/XTi, sports?, wrong section?
I see, Thank you sir! What do you use, if you don't mind me asking?
-
Re: Cannon 400D/XTi, sports?, wrong section?
The XTi should be fine for that use. At 3 fps and 27 jpeg or 10 RAW it should do just fine. Team it up with some good glass such as the 70-200 f/2.8 or any of the Canon long primes and it should do very well for sports photography.

Been a long time since anyone called me 'sir'...lol.
I use a nikon d80 and mostly a 18-135 lens, but like I said, I don't do action sports though I suppose I might give it a shot if the opportunity arose.

Re: Cannon 400D/XTi, sports?, wrong section?
Just shot a major bike festival with the XTi. Never even took the EOS 1D out of the bag, except to take the 70-200 f/2.8L off and put it on the XTi. Shot for a couple of hours in the pouring rain on Saturday - I wanted to see if it would quit. I broke all my own rules just to see what would happen. I shot in aperture priority (usually only use full manual), shot tons of AI Servo auto focus with high speed downhill racers - everything worked great. I am becoming more and more impressed with the XTi and less inclined to buy another "pro" body. I could buy 5 XTis for the price of one EOS-1D. And if they quit, I could just throw them away :D

I think my EOS-1D is going to get sold.

Re: Cannon 400D/XTi, sports?, wrong section?
How much was your 17-200 lens? How much optical zoom is it? I don't know how to read the numbers..yet.

70-200 Lens
It's a 70-200 f/2.8L. I paid $1000 for a used one, about ten years ago. For digital SLRs, there is no digital zoom - it's all optical. But there is a "digital conversion factor" because the digital sensor is smaller than a 35mm film frame that the lens system was originally designed for. The Canon 400D/XTi has a 1.6x conversion factor. That makes the 70-200 lens comparable to a 112-320mm on a 35mm camera. It's not exactly the same, but the reach and framing are the same.
You might want to take a look at some of the stuff in our Learn section, especially the digital SLR guide. You already have a camera, but there's probably some useful information in the guide, anyway. I know there's some stuff about the crop factor: [url=http://www.photographyreview.com/digitalslrguidecrx.aspxDigital SLR Guide >>[/url]
Hope you're enjoying the site. I like seeing enthusiastic new converts. Where in California are you? There are pretty good groups of members in the Bay Area and in LA.

Re: Cannon 400D/XTi, sports?, wrong section?
Thank you! I'm from OC, cypress/long beach area. I know that there is no digital zoom, but like I want to know how much optical zoom the lens will give. Like the point and shoot Canon powershot S3 IS has an optical zoom of 12x. What would the 70-200 f/2.8 compare to that?

Re: Cannon 400D/XTi, sports?, wrong section?
Does a 18-200 lens zoom 15x?
-
Re: Cannon 400D/XTi, sports?, wrong section?
If I understand it right the 'X' is determined by dividing maximum focal length by minimum so an 18-200 would have 11x.
Now that may sound like its not as good as 15x but I'm guessing you want to know how close you could zoom into subjects at a distance. So lets say you have a 100-400mm lens. It obviously would let you zoom in twice as close as a 200 but it only has a 4x zoom factor.
I'm guessing you are using a p&s which has a 15x optical zoom...never go with digital zoom and dslr doesn't have digital zoom anyway....so if you know or can find the max/min focal length of your camera, you'll be better able to make the comparison.
I'm not an expert here but this is how I'm understanding it.
I'd like to see a chart of what one could expect from magnification of various focal lengths..

Re: Cannon 400D/XTi, sports?, wrong section?
Here's a little visual reference for you. All the images in this post were taken with a 70-200mm zoom, standing in the same spot. The word "Park" was the focal subject. First, here's the 70mm focal length:

Now, Here's the 200mm shot:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e3...htlr/200mm.jpg
These shots were both taken with a Digital Rebel XT, and downsampled (reduced in size) to 800x533 for purposes of uploading to the web. In the last shot, I reopened the 200mm shot and cropped an 800x533 section out of it. Then I did noise reduction and sharpening on it. If you're familiar with Photoshop, this is what you'd see at the "actual pixels" view:

Hope this reference helps you.

Re: Cannon 400D/XTi, sports?, wrong section?
Wow thanks! Well the S3 IS has an Optical zoom rating of 15x. and a digital zoom of 5x. So I know it's not digital. Anyway, I need to figure out if I can get a good "walk around lens" or something versatile that I can shoot up close with and far away..so sacrifice a little zoom for somethings? What do you guys think? Or should I just get two lenses?

Re: Cannon 400D/XTi, sports?, wrong section?
If I had it to do over, I'd consider a telephoto. In reality, I tend to use either the 70mm or 200mm end- very seldom do I use anything in between. The tele would be much shorter and lighter. Lessons learned. Mind you, I'll not be selling the zoom anytime soon........
