Would love some advice, going to buy a digital SLR!

Hi, well I just got into photography a few years ago and bought a Nikon S550 digital camera last year and it actually broke this year.

I was looking to spend, MAX, $800 CAD for a camera and lens.
I'll probably buy whatever I am buying, USED...

Now I'm not looking to buy a crapload of lens.. Just something to take pictures of landscape and everyday things, would love to take pictures of nighttime landscape which my nikon s550 REALLY failed at hehe.

Was looking at either a Canon xsi or a xti
Or a nikon D60 or something similar..
What camera should I get and what specific lens should I look for?

Welcome to the forum.

It might be hard but see if you can find the cameras local to see how they fit in your hands. That would be a very improtant thing to look for, cause if you don't like the fit you aren't going to shoot as much as you want. Then once you decide on which camera body you want to get then the lens question will come into play, also to see how much money you have after the body purchase.

Since I've come from Canon gear the past 10 years or so (just switched to Olympus E-P1 for the weight - or lack of it), I'll just respond to the 2 Canons you mentioned. I just sold my XTi and it is a wonderful camera. With the right lens it would probably suite your needs.

Here are some Canon dslr's in the used department of B&H. They usually have a good supply of used equipment. I linked it to Canon - just switch it when you want to go to Nikon or whatever......

Please note there is an XTi with a nice 17-85 IS lens for a little over $600 I believe.

You also might try KEH as they are the largest used photography equipment dealers in the US. They have a great reputation and very fair prices.
