Why does my rabbit not like being picked up or held?

Rabbits have a natural fear of heights so it is better to interact with them at ground level. Try wrapping a nervous rabbit in a towel or blanket when you hold it, this will prevent it kicking out and hurting itself and will stop it scratching you.

COMMERCIAL PELLETS should only be fed as a small portion of a rabbit’s diet. It is easy to overfeed pellets because they don’t cause the feeling of fullness they get from eating hay, and the high level of calories can lead to obesity. Pellets also do not promote normal tooth wear, and the lack of chewing may lead to behavioural problems. The lack of water content could also result in urinary tract disease. Ideally, commercial pellets should only be 10% of a rabbit’s diet.

Re: Why does my rabbit not like being picked up or held?

Rabbits are best kept in pairs or even in small groups. They will groom each other, feed together and sleep together. Being with other rabbits provides them with companionship and also security – with more rabbits available to be on the look out for threats. Neutering rabbits ensures opposite sex pairs do not breed and once neutered, a male and female rabbit is often a good combination. Rabbits paired when young also tend to be more compatible long term. It is quite traumatic for a rabbit to be separated from another rabbit it has bonded with. Being within sight, sound and scent or another rabbit can also be very comforting for rabbits, so new introductions can be made gradually with rabbits side by side. Pairing is often easier in winter but can be carried out at any time of year and a single rabbit should not be left alone for any significant period of time.

Many rabbits find handling frightening. As prey animals, their survival instincts are strong. While being handled and cuddled, they sense that they cannot escape. You'll need to build a bond of love and trust to help them overcome this instinctive fear. Click this link here now rabbit for home
