    Very Near-by objects gets blurred

    Hi

I got a Sony Cybershot DSC T9 digital 3x zoom camera and am trying to take pics of near-by objects but the image is getting blurred when I get extremely close - then again, I cant get a near-by shot as the zoom power is low - so how do I go abt taking a picture of a near by object with my camera ?

    Thanks

You will have to figure out what the min focus distance is for your lens. You may be trying to focus outside the range of your camera lens' ability.

If you want to get closer and shoot macro mode you will need to purchase a set of close up lenses that mount on the filter treads of your lens. If you don't have threads then there is not much you can do to get closer.

Remember close up lenses reduce the available light and bring slight distortion to the image. The more close up lenses you stack the more light is reduced and more distortion is induced.

Look for a set of close up lenses in the filter diameter and thread count for your camera.

My lens is so small that I doubt if anything can placed over it.
This is how my camera looks -

OK I checked the camera specification, it says:
    Focusing Range : AF=50cm~ , Macro AF=W:8cm~ , T:25cm~ , Magnifying Glass Mode=1cm~20cm

So there is a special Macro setting on the camera to let you take really close up photographs of small things almost touching the lens.

    Ordinary focussing only to 50cm
Macro focussing to between 25cm and 8cm
Magnifying glass mode focussing 20cm to 1cm

But you can't take ordinary photographs in Magnifying Glass mode.

I can't find a manual online, so I'll leave you to read your instruction book and find how to use the Macro and Magnifying Glass modes.

    anjanesh,

That picture does not show your lens. That thing you see in that picture is the viewfinder. The lens is under the sliding cover.

Edit: Well, from looking at other images of the DSC-T9, maybe that is the lens. That's a tiny lens and a weird place to put it. It sure looks like a viewfinder.

From what Smartwombat says, if you put your camera in macro mode you can focus down to 8cm and 1cm in magnifying mode. Now that's pretty close!

Trying to figure this out - I have under Program :
    EV - 0EV
Focus - Center AF (Other options are Multi AF, Spot AF, 0.5m, 1.0m, 3.0m, 7.0m. oo)
Metering Mode - Center (Other options are Spot, Multi)
    White Bal - Auto
    ISO - Auto
    P.Quality - Fine
    REC Mode - Normal
    P.Effect - Off
    Saturation - Normal
    Contrast - Normal
    Sharpness - Normal
Setup - for time, memory etc etc

Re: Very Near-by objects gets blurred

Focusing range is from you to the point of focus based on the f/stop you have. Depth of Field is the distance that the lens will show in focus from the front to the back of a subject. Take a chess set, if you set it up and focus on one of the pawns and have your f/stop setting at say f/2.0 and take a photo it will have a very shallow DOF (focusing range) of say 4" (example only) so it might show the pawn in focus and everything around it out of focus.

If you then say take the same image focusing on the pawn at say f/8 then it will show you a greater DOF say 8" (example only) so anything that is sitting in a focal range of 8" from front to back of the point you focus on (the pawn), should be in focus.

When you are wanting to focus on something very close to the lens you need to set your camera in macro mode, but you will have a shallow DOF, used for taking closeups of say coins as an example, or a watch face.

    Make Sense.

IT's not focus range you should be looking for. Under mode, look for MACRO or Magnifying Glass mode.

Here is a well written review and if you don't have a manual for the camera it's worth a look for some examples of settings.

Re: Very Near-by objects gets blurred

Thanks for your replies - I did get the magnifying mode - it was under camera options - after Auto and Program - only for magnifying mode - it wasnt labelled magnifying mode but had some small icon of a magnifying glass !

But I cant seem to make any distance settings with it. Or is it auto-adjusting ?
What would be the best example of taking such a photo for testing ?
