Shutter Button No Longer Has Focus Step

The camera is a Kodak LS743.

The problem I am having is the shutter button no longer has 2 "steps" in it. Before this problem started (don't know how it started) you'd push the button half way in to focus, then push the button fully to take the picture. Now I am unable to focus.

I've opened the camera up and can't see any way of fixing it. The shutter button actually pushes onto a thin sort of wafer material inside the camera and there doesn't seem to be anything visually wrong or missing. Do you guys have any suggestions on how I can fix this problem?

Hey there, and welcome to the fourm. Sorry nobody has responded to your question yet, and I'm affraid I'm not going to be much help either. I know nothing about your camera so I'm just guessing here... I know some of the higher end cameras have custom settings so you can move the AF function to other buttons. Is it possible that your camera has this ability and the AF was switched to another button?

My only other suggestion would be to send it to Kodak and have them look at it.

Re: Shutter Button No Longer Has Focus Step

Many thanks for your reply Michael.

I'm pretty sure my camera does not have the feature you describe. Actually I'm not sure you quite understand the problem I am having, I should have been a little more clear!

I am talking about the actual shutter button and not any sort of function of the camera. You see, when all was well, when the button was pressed you could feel there was a "half way point". If you held the button at this point the camera would focus. Once it focused you would then go ahead and press the button fully in. My problem is more of a physical problem in that you can feel the button no longer has this half way point. I was just wondering if anyone knew how the mechanism of this 2 step button worked they might be able to help me fix it.

For sure if I can't fix it myself I will try some camera repair places but I'm going on holiday in 2 days and need it for then! The camera does actually take pictures just fine - well at least outdoor pictures. This is probably because the camera detects I have not focussed the picture so quickly focusses the picture itself before activating the flash and capturing the picture - don't know, I'm not an expert! But obviously since you cannot focus, pictures in macro mode are useless.

    Thanks for your help.

Re: Shutter Button No Longer Has Focus Step

Not really any help to fix your problem just wanted to mention I am having a similar issue with my Kodak camera the C340, though my shutter button never did have a half way point identifier.. Same way to focus for me hold the shutter half way to auto focus then press further to take the shot.

When I press the shutter half way it seems to focus ok, but when I press to shoot it doesn't fire or it looses focus and try s to focus again.. at times it can take 6+ attempts to finally take the picture, just started doing this about a month ago and it's real bad when its humid out or lower light conditions.

When I spoke to Kodak about it I was given a RMA # to send it in for repair (well within warranty) I still have it though I just cant bare being with out it for 2 weeks, or so when it still at least does work with patients but I do loose good shots

From the sounds of it I am guessing yours is no longer in warranty, if it is when you get back I would defiantly contact them and get it sent in. But I know how you feel I just got back from a 2 week vacation and brought my semi working Kodak with me

Will get it sent off some time before the warranty is up.
