Question Shallow DOF: what models should I look at under $300? and what specs denote that?

I'm looking for a new digicam and the ability to get those nice shots with a blurred background and focused subject is at the top of my list.
    my budget is $300.

what are some models I should look at that excel in this area?

and what specs should I look for? (small f/ number and large CCD right?)

The longer the focal length, the shallower the DOF. The closer the focus, the shallower the DOF. The wider the aperture, the shallower the DOF.

So you're looking at cameras with lenses that have larger aperture (small f/number) at larger focal lengths.

It is highly unlikely to find one for $300. These small cameras have focal lengths (real, not "35mm equivalents") of about 7mm to 23mm. These focal lengths do not allow for shallow DOF.

If shallow DOF is important to you, save up the pennies for a DSLR.
