Resolution Setting Question...For Sony Camera

My Sony DSC-P150 7.2MP camera has a "3:2" setting/option just below the 7MP setting/option in the resolution menu. Does anyone know what this is for and how it differs from the 7MP option?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but the 3:2 setting refers to the aspect ratio of the picture. Most digital cameras capture with a 4:3 ratio. My 3.2mp powershot captures images 2048 pixels wide by 1536, or 4 pixels of width for every 3 of height. Most DSLRs capture in the 3:2 ratio. My D70 captures images 3008 pixels wide and 2000 tall, or 3 pixels of width for every 2 of height. So if you change your camera to 3:2, it'll capture images in that ratio, which I believe is 3072x2048, which is roughly 6.3 megapixels...

the 3 to 2 is the older aspect ration i think its a throwback to film and it matches a 6 x 4 print for example.. 3 to 4 seems more common on consumer digitals probably cos it matches computer screens and LCDs i would guess.. the 3 to 4 dosnt seem to match any commonly used print size thow.. 6 x 4.. 5 x 7.. 8 x 10.. A4.. all lose something..
