Recommended Camera for a novice user

I am a novice camera user and really enjoy photgraphy. The problem is I bought a Canon Rebel and I have no idea how to use it. I have tried to listen to people explain things to me but for some reason, cameras are not my thing lol. I have tried using it manual mode and cannot get anything right on it. Now, I am wanting to get a new digital camera but don't know what to look at and am hoping some of you could direct me in the right direction. I would like a camera that can really zoom in if need be when we are outside. I would like it to give really good quality. I don't care for the manual modes and such so that isn't important. I would also like to be able to take night shots too. I tried again last night with our kids as the Olympic torch passsed through our town but again, the pics sucked because I cannot figure out the manual mode. Anyways, hope this can help someone to point me in the right driection.

Which canon rebel do you have?
What lens are you using?
They all have several automatic modes.

It is a waste if you cannot use it and its capabilities so I would suggest going for one of the better point and shoot cameras. I'm not up on p&s cameras so I'll let others suggest which one would suit you.
Things that they would want to know are your budget, what you'll be shooting, whether you want it to fit in your pocket or not.

I just want to use it for taking family pics when we go out and for around the house. We like to take scenic pics with our kids. Other then that, not much else I am really specific on.

Is it a digital Rebel or a film Rebel? Either way, it has an auto mode. To get started and ensure your photos are good, you can start on the auto mode. That's the sure thing. Then, as you feel more comfortable using it, you can start experimenting with the other shooting modes. Full manual makes you responsible for all the decisions and you have to really understand the basics of photography to get good photos in manual. So I'd save that one for last.

It is a Rebel digital. I have been using it in auto mode but the camera is a waste really when I cannot use it in manual mode.
