Nite shot

Hi there everybody, I'm new here, Just bought a Canon G9 need to pointers on how to take a nite photo. Trying to shot out of 17th floor window view of the city, I'm not getting anything decent yet, Suggestion anybody? Would really appreciated... Thank you.
