nikon vs canon for 5 megapixels?

i have a cannon powershot s200. i've actually been fairly happy with it in most repsects, but my girlfriend's camera, the nikon coolpix 3100, seems to always have much better colors than my camera. in fact, all the time when we both take photos of the same thing, her photos come out much more bright and colorful.

recently, i've been thinking of upgrading my camera to a 5 megapixel. my first instinct was to buy a nikon since i've always really like the photos from my girlfriend's camera... but just because the nikon photos are better for the 2 megapixel cameras, doesnt necesarily mean that the same holds true for the 5 megapixel versions. so, does anyone out there have experience w/ both the nikon and canon for 5 megapixels? i definitely am looking for acompact or ultracompact camera. adding to my dilemna is that i've read that some of the canon cameras have some manual features for focusing etc, but i think the nikons dont. anyways, any advice would be appreciated. or, if you have another 5 megapixel camera toi recommend, that would be cool too.

    thanks

    sub miniature...

normal kinda fit in your pocket size..

long optical zoom camera.. the downside bieng they dont fit in your pocket..

I think you would be wise to look beyond Canon/Nikon. There are so many brands making great p&s/prosumer cameras these days. I think the question basically comes down to which features are essential...Figure out which features you absolutely want, and eliminate different models accordingly. Of course, then you'll have to make eliminations based on price, size, etc...Coming up with specifics will help narrow your choice down to just a few cameras. If I were you, I'd start here...

I don't know how to put this, but...I'm kind of a big deal...People know me.

i'd like to spend about 300 to 400, but could go all the way up to 500 *maybe*. the camera definitely needs to be something that fits in my pocket. i know that the small cameras all have crap zoom, but i'm traveling constantly now, so i need a camera that wont be a pain to carry around. is there any particular kodak you recommend?

yeah, i've looked around the dpreview site a bit. i guess the problem i have is that even iof i know what features i'll get w/ a certain camera, i dont know how good the picture quality will be. for instance, my powershot has plenty of features.. but i'm not that impressed w/ the colors in my photos. the other problem is that i'm on the road right now in random underdeveloped countries, so i cant go down to a store and check out the actual cameras... i have to just order from online. also, the annoying thing about the compare thing on dpreview, is that i ony have a few features that are absolutely essential. when i enter just those, it says that my search is too broad, and only shows the first few cameras that match my criteria... since it's alphabetical, they're all canons!

I would also look at dcresource.com. They are a great site too.

so we have narrowed it down somewhat.. fit in your pocket.. not overly bothered about long zoom.. this just leaves us with a huge amount of cameras to choose from specification wise.. but.. ??

nice bright colourfull pictures.. isnt exactly a specification but i think it was one of your requirments..

    how about the kodak LS753...

    Hey Vlad!!!

You know, if you like the results of Caryn's photos, my suggestion would be to go with the same camera or one or two models up from hers. I noticed how vivid her photos are coming out and the clarity is great as well. Your camera seems to do okay in low light.

The pros on this site will probably give you much better help than I can, but that's my observation and suggestion.

Oh BTW, I was sooo bummed that you didn't get a chance to photograph the tiger you saw. What an amazing journey you have been on so far. I can't wait to see where you are headed next!

Also check out the Olympus C-60 zoom 350$ or the Kodak Easyshare DX7630 zoom 350$
both are 6 meg cameras but some of the best picture quality for the price.
