Thanks for the link, GB1. Somehow I missed the press release for the sensor. But I did read the Fujifilm Finepix F200EXR camera press release closely and I'm pretty excited about is. Here's a link to my article on it:
Good article also, sort of rounds out the topic. It's really interesting how Fuji designed the sensor to have the same adjacent colors and can record different amts of light on each and then combine them, creating an in-camera HDR effect to increase the dynamic range. Wow. The only downside I see on that is that the resolution is halved and that the two light dots are at ever-so-slightly different positions, and would seem to affect quality.. But only a very very small amt (partially negated by the 2-to-1 combination of the same color sensors...? I'm not sure).
Anyway, I can see this approach being expanded in the future. I also see in these articles that people are realizing that MPs are not a great indicator of photographic quality, which is so true.

The pixel positions in a Bayer sensor array are always an issue. Even in a normal RGB Bayer sensor the three colored pixels need to be combined into one pixel for the actual image. That's doen with software after the sensor collects the data. That's part of why the Foveon sensor is such a big deal (some people think so, anyway). It layers the RGB pixels on top of each other instead of ajacent so that there's no recombining of color data that isn't positioned the same.
But the question is - can you see a problem with the Bayer sensor strategy. And I don't think you can. Not for a few years now, anyway. It will be very interesting to see the image quality from the new sensor. Fujifilm has been very creative with their sensors. It hasn't made them competitive with the big guys. But I do think they've made some excellent cameras with special qualities - especially their digital SLRs.
