Question New to the forum and have a few questions

You can move if this is in the wrong place.

    Hello,
I have a Sony DSC V3 and I have some questions about how my pictures turn out. I have the camera on auto why does the picture turn out like http://community.webshots.com/photo/...73320420pvQjBD All bright? It also happens indoors too I took some of my sugar gliders today in their nesting box and their faces where all bright.

Then other times they can turn out like http://community.webshots.com/photo/...73328922HtERVO & http://community.webshots.com/photo/...66153228jfodOX.

Also when things are moving you can tell.. how do you change the shutter speed so that it does not do this? I think that is what you would do right? Because this camera is soooo fast at taking a picture.

Oh I also wanted to say that have the V1 and I didn't notice these things too much, especially the thing with the action shots with it. That is why I found a board to ask my questions. I have had Sony digital cameras for 4 years now.. I think it was the p51 I had then the v1 now the v3. This the the first time I have noticed these problems like this.

Here is the picture I took today of my Sugar glider in its nesting box.

    Thanks
    Candice

nice picture of the little animal.. it made me smile..

your first picture has too much contrast.. very low but bright sun causing a wided variation in highs and lows.. the highlights are burning out.. the answer is to find the contast adjustment your camera has and set it on low... not the ultimate cure but it helps..

the second picture is the opposite to the first.. low light no shadows the camera has used a slow shutter speed and the people are spinning fast (i think).. sports mode or manual useing a faster shutter speed is the answer here..

the last picture.. i have no idea.. it reminds me of a computor generated image similar to what u would find in a game.. is it a parrot.. i dont know what it is or what is should look like.. exept to say it looks under exposed.. he he

i think u must have a manual that came with your camera.. that should tell u how to alter the cameras settings and give example of when and why.. u have a nice camera it should take nice pictures..

not owning such a camera i cannot give u a menu walkthru.. someone might pop up that can.. if not its the manual u have to study..

at least u seem to have some interesting things to take pictures of.. thats a great help.. he he

    Sony automatic, not so automatic

Dynamic range. Digital sensors have about the same dynamic range as slide film, or about 5 stops.
My friends had a V1 and one of the things I noticed about it compared to my Canon is the Sony's meter was biased toward preserving the highlights and the Canon's toward preserving the shadows. It looks like Sony is biasing their meters more toward preserving the shadows now.
The first picture the dynamic range is outside of what the sensor can handle and because most of the picture is in shadow(dark) the camera adjusted to make sure the dark was exposed properly and the highlights that fell outside the sensors dynamic range were rendered as white with no detail.
The second picture is mostly in shadow, and the scene falls within the dynamic range of the sensor(no black shadows and no blown out white). The blur comes from the picture being relatively dark and the camera, not knowing you were shooting moving subjects, slowed the shutter speed down enough that it could no longer stop the motion of the people on the street. A faster shutter speed is required to stop the motion, but the lens aperture is probably fully open and the sensor still doesn't have enough light, so it slows the shutter speed resulting in blur. Flash, take the picture in sun, or increase the ISO(sensitivity).
The third picture is taken in a very dark environment, the camera did all it could and found with the lens wide open and the shutter speed pretty slow it still couldn't get enough light so it increased the ISO. The high ISO accounts for the grainy look to the photo. Flash would have helped here.
A book on basic photography will help you understand the relationships between ISO, shutter speed, aperture and dynamic range. I found with my friends Sony, it wasn't the most automatic of automatic cameras. It required some basic photography knowledge to get good photos on a consistent basis. The pictures it took were quite nice though when used properly.
