I'd highly recommend the Fuji S5100 over the Canon Powershot S1 IS. Though I can't comment on the others, the Fuji S5100 has brought nothing but great shots and excellent features with it. I have a bunch of shots taken with it if you click here. That's just my two cents,

    Hope it helped,

    Jared

"junk or golden" isnt the real issue is it... life is never that simple.. most consumer digicams are much of a muchness.. they all take reasonable pics..

what matters.. dunno... but catagorizing cameras by mega pixels isnt good enough any more.. so how do we split them up..

    price is one option...

size is another.. do they fit in your shirt pocke or not..

zoom range do u want long zoom or not..

mega pixels.. 3 is enough for most people nowadays.. do u really need more.. .

fast action.. sports scenic portrait or just general purpose people shots..

okay the list can get longer so what matters..????

i think three main things matter...

size... the "shirt pocket" factor.. it is usefull if they fit in there..

zoom range which relates to size to be honest.. long zooms dont fit in your shirt pocket.. it also relates to the type of pics u take.. if u only ever take general purpose people shots u dont really need long zoom..

then we have price.. that matters to most folks..

if reading all the reviews on the planet aint helped u make up your mind.. asking in forums wont help either.. reading thru em might thow.. but u really do have to make up your mind as to what it is u want and expect from the camera u buy... also bear in mind the "much of a muchness" factor.. forget the "junk or golden" one..

what u shouldnt do... assume that more mega pixels means better.. it dosnt..

worry overly much about making the "best" choice.. all u need to do is make a reasonable choice based upon your needs and expectations.

dont waste your money... or in other words dont assume that more expensive means better.. it dosnt...

ps.. whoops.. forgot one thing that might matter to most folks.. the video factor.. it is a thing that still varies quitea bit from camera to camera.. a card full of 640x480 video with sound as opposed to a few seconds of silent 320x240 being the two extemes..

    Great Advice!

That was a great post, trog100. I've been enjoying your posts. Your advice is very practical and straightforward. It's hard for a lot of people to find their way through the marketing hype. Your posts cut right through it and get to the point.

    Thanks!

    Re: Great Advice!

Thank u John.. i do try and help folks by cuting thru the cr-p.. err.. hype.. but sometimes i have been known to offend the odd purist.. not as i mind overly much.. he he

one nice thing about this forum is that it does seem to be populated by "normal" people with normal problems.. i like that..

thow "what is the best camera" type questions are a major problem arnt they.. there really are too many choices with very little between em.. and due to the "hype" u mention folks really are misinformed right at the very outset..

one thing is clear.. digital cameras in all guises are getting cheaper.. we really aint far off the magic 50$ mass market digital camera that takes good pictures..

i have been less than attentive scenewise for about eighteen months and am quite surprised at just how better and cheaper digital has become..
