Maximizing the use of my NIkon L110

    Hey guys,

I am a beginning photographer looking to take photos for a mainly item based review website. I plan to purchase items and talk about what I like and do not like. (I do not want to include the site so you do not view this as SPAM, haha).

I purchased this camera today during a Black Friday deal. I am happy that I purchased it. I want to be able to set an object stationary and take pictures of it. I know I need a tripod - this is true, I plan on purchasing one soon.

However, I wanted to know what settings and what not to tinker with to get the best quality?

This is what I mean - examples (from MarcusTroy.com and LaLaNYC.com, respectively) -

    Anyone have any ideas?
(Or should I return this Camera and purchase the p100?)

    Thanks!

    Exactly...

If you are doing pictures of small objects then you need:

    - a small-object-flower setting on the camera
    - the ability to set a small aperture (high number) to give yourself depth of field
    - preferably the ability to choose the focus point
    - a hole for the tripod to screw into on the bottom of the camera
    - the ability to turn off vibration reduction when the camera is used on a tripod

The examples you show are what NOT to do:

    - the first one is too far away, the subject is surrounded by lots of distracting detail plus it's not very sharp
    - The second one is bizarrely framed but what really gets me is the focus. I suppose the focus point is vaguely in the center but there is lots of detail like the white cord on the front of the boot that is out-of-focus. You need more depth of field to have the whole boot sharp from front to back. If you stick with a low ISO (to avoid noise) then this means a slow shutter speed which is why you need a tripod
    - The third one seems to have lots of empty space around the subject and the tree trunk right in the middle doesn't help

Can't comment on the L110 vs P100. Point-and-shoots change so often plus they don't have what I need.

Not buying any more gear this year. I hope
