    Hoods

Can anyone recommend a hood for the ef-s 18-55mm hood 58mm fixture.

Just got a petal hood for it in the post, and after putting it on realised its the wrong one as it needs to be round... newb mistake.. live and learn.

I'm not sure there is a dedicated lens hood for that lens. Does the hood you have attach to the lens OK? If so, does it cause vignetting or any other problems? A standard round hood may cause vignetting when shooting at 18mm but I would have to test that out to be sure. You can get a basic round hood that screws onto your filter threads. They are pretty inexpensive and I think you can get metal, plastic or a colapsable rubber one. I have a rubber one for my 50mm f/1.8 lens and it works great.

oh it attaches just fine, just moves around when focusing.

think ill look at getting a new lense soon so may wait and get the hood with the lense now.

    Re: Hoods

What do you mean it moves around when focusing and as long as its attached, why is that a problem?

    Re: Hoods

frog, he means it rotates when the lens focuses, because the front of the lens spins in order to focus. Petal hoods should only be used on lenses that don't rotate to focus because of the nature of the petal hood. The petals are longer on the top and shorter on the sides because of the format of the photo, but if the petals rotate, they can get in the way of the image and cause black marks on the edges.

    Sorry, not true.
Petal hoods are available for Canon lenses where the hood fits the lens barrel and not around the front lens element. That would work independent of whether the lens final element rotates or not.

I see that the picture on Canon's web site shows the bayonet mount is on the front element of the lens, unlike other lenses, that's probably why their recommended lens hood (the Lens Hood EW-60C) is round and not petal shaped.

    Re: Hoods

true, SW, you are right. i was thinking of just front element hoods.

and to further degrade my post, it doesnt seem that the hood being in the wrong position affects the image as far as black marks from the hood, at least on my 70-200. It doesn't matter what way the hood is installed, i tried it yesterday out of curiosity. For wider lenses though, maybe. But either way, it won't really shield the camera from sun the way it's supposed to if it rotates 90 degrees.

    Re: Hoods

A lens hood is a piece that attaches to the front of a lens and acts as a shade for the front element. It keeps stray light from getting into the lens and bouncing around causing lens flare. You can see a picture and a better explanation here.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lens_hood

Vignetting is a darkening of the corners on a photo. It's usually caused by something getting in the frame of the photo. It is common when you stack two or more filters on a lens, or if you use a lens hood that is not correctly designed for the lens you are using. Some people also do it for an artistic look.

I had a feeling that the hood was a hat, thanks for the answer
