    is this a good deal

I have been lurking these forums for a while, and had wanted to get a d80.....but this seems like a steal to me so i am thinking i should jump on it....because i think it is for a short time(to match bestbuy's ad for this week).....i don't have any older lenses, which is from what i read the only advantage to the d80......so whats your verdict?

It looks like a good deal to me price wise. However, not being a Nikon user, I would check out the reviews, etc.

BTW - if I were you, I would post this thread on the Nikon forum here also - you can copy/paste it. As with most website forums, there are less people around on the weekends - so get it up on the Nikon forum as you're likely to get more replies.

It's not older lenses you're worried about, it's about using any non AF-S lenses. I have quite a few that wouldn't work on the D60 so it would be a terrible choice for me. Given how low the price is on a D80 right now I would hands down go for the D80 and its superior viewfinder. If you are willing to spend a little more a used D200 is probably the best deal out there. I bought one with 4200 actuations (its rated to 100K) for around $800 and it's in pristine condition. As for the lens start out with either the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 or the 50mm f/1.4 (preferable). These are the sharpest lenses per dollar you can buy and are great for all around snapshots.

I have no idea how good of a deal it is, but at least if it's from BH, you'd be getting it from a reliable source.

Seconded. Check out Adorama and some neighboring brick and mortar stores (yes, even the Best Buys and Circuit Citys of the world) are pretty competitive this time of year for the annual "Dads and Grads" sale events.
