    D lenses on 35mm

Would a newer digital lens generally be compatible with a AF 35mm camera? Specifically, would a Nikon D70 kit lens work on a Nikon N70? Thanks.

    - Yes designed-for-digital Nikon lenses will fit on film bodies.
    - No the D70 kit lens will not give satisfactory images on a film body. You will find that at 18mm there will just be the center part of the image with all the edges dark.

I believe that the top-end 17-55 f2.8 constant lens works much better on film bodies but that's 10 times more expensive.

Nikon's DX series lenses will fit and operate on their film cameras but won't give you a full image circle. IOW, only a circle at the center of the negative will be exposed. These lenses are designed for the smaller sized digital chip that's used on their (and Fuji's) camera bodies. In some cases, it may give you full frame coverage but not in most cases. I hear that the 12-24 covers full frame at about 22-24mm, but the rest of the range (12-22) won't.

The DX lenses include that 12-24, the D70 kit lens and the new 17-55 f2.8, as well as a few others. Lenses that will fully work with your N70 will be fine with the D70 though.

To Franglais and Another View, Thanks for the info. I have the N70 and I will still get a D70. I was just hoping to get a little more mileage out of the kit lens, but it's not a deal breaker. Do you think the lit lens is wide enough for home interior photos?

    18mm X 1.5 = the angle of view of a 27mm lens on your N70.

I don't really think so for most applications - you'll probably also want a lens in the 12-24 range. Nikon makes one which expensive but very good. Tokina is coming out with one for about half the price. Previous experience with their lenses says that it will be pretty good but I haven't tried it yet. Sigma has one and Tamron is supposed to soon.

If you get Nikon Capture software, you might also look at the 10.5 DX fisheye lens. With the software, you can take out the fisheye look and make the lines straight. Pretty amazing, seen it done in a presentation.

Excellent suggestions, Another View! I found an example of what you are describing with Nikon's Capture Ver. 4.o software at http://www.digitalreview.ca/cams/NikonCapture4.shtml about half way down the page is a good fish eye-to-straightened view.

This may provide the solution I am looking for.
