Cokin Filter

I am looking at getting a Cokin Series P Gradual Grey Neutral Density Filter. If I am taking landscape pictures, what strength filter is most useful 2, 4, or 8? Also If I were to get an 8 is a soft or full filter more useful?

It really depends on the situation. Ideally, you would have all of them, but that's cost prohibitive, and probably a pain to carry also. I have a graduated ND filter.. I can't remember what I ordered as it was long ago, but I believe I went middle of the pack, with soft drop off. I am not sure what soft vs full filter means?

Anyway, good you're doing your research FIRST.. those things can be expensive.

Look into a P121 . I like the way it works in the pacific NW.Graduated means half of the filter is shaded. Keep an eye out on craig's list for them I managed to get about $ 300.00 worth of cokin stuff for $120.00 a few months back.

I'm more of the mind that just about anything you use a filter for, you can adjust in software like Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. I understand that it's just a neutral density filter, but I think the days of having to use a filter system are about over in favor of software that enables you to process your image as you need.

I don't see post processing taking the place of the neutral density filter. If it's way over-exposed there is nothing to process. Maybe if they start giving cameras the equivalent of very low ISO??? – TF
