i have found some more cameras, olympus c360, c370, and canon a510 for the same price as the above ones, so they too are now an option
You seem to be right on track for a first camera. Stay inexpensive until you see what you want and how much you will use it.
Factors to consider are:
Size--The larger cameras are of course better. The megapizel can only process what the lens delivers, so don''t be fooled by high MP. Larger cameras usually have better lenses.
You certainly don't want a SLR for your first camera. In the old days of slides I used SLR to get zoom lenses that are now standard on most cameras even the point and shoot.
Read and learn as you shoot pictures and see what you want to do and if you need to put more money into another camera in about a year or two.
Photo-shop is fun to work with digital pictures which is something not able to be done with the old film type cameras.
