That's a tough subject. Don't get your hopes up for good results. But if you are going to try it, first do some mundane night tests to get an idea of what to expect.

I would shoot in manual exposure mode, using a tripod. If manual exposure is too much for you, then try shutter priority. The hard part is going to be getting a photo that freezes action - in fact, it's going to be nearly impossible if your subject is doing much more than holding still. In any case, using shutter priority will allow you to choose the fastest possible shutter speed in order to ensure you don't have motion blur. Keep an eye on the exposure meter or histogram, too. You can't just set a high shutter speed - if it's too high you'll underexpose and the photos will be too dark.

Always do tests before you try something new! That way you won't be completely inexperienced when you do the real shoot. Wildlife at night is going to be next to impossible so testing before you do the actual session will help you better understand what to expect.
