which camera and lens to buy

My son is on a crew team. I need to take pictures from far away. I don't current own a SLR and want to know which camera is easiest to use but will allow me to put on a lense to take pictues from a great distance.

Actually, the Tokina 400mm f/5.6 might also be a good option, 400mm is a lot of mm.,

I will suggest you buying Nikon D3100 + 70-300mm AF-S Lens

Another good option would be the Nikon D5100 + 70-300 lens.
The D5100 is a little bit larger and might be a better fit for the heavier 70-300 lens.
Regardless, go to a camera store to get the feel before you consider buying on line.
