    Which Camera?

    hello everyone!

I am completely new to photography (don't even own a camera) and I am looking to puchase a digital camera. I am probably looking for a point and shoot (with maybe some manual features so I can fool around with them, as a segway to a better camera perhaps). My budget is around $300 US. I think I would like to have an Li-Ion battery opposed to AA (correct me on this if that is crazy). Mostly I will be keeping images on my computer, but a nice resolution would be great as I will also print several out.

    Thanks for any help!

Just give you some ideas I have looked up 4 cameras from 4 different manufacturers. These may not be your choices, but they fit you criteria, and they will help you to see what is out there.

    Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z20

    Sony DSC-W5

    Nikon Coolpix 5600

    Pentax Optio MX4

I hope these help, and please don't hesitate to ask any more questions you may have.

lithium batteries cost the manufacturer more money to fit so there has to be a reason for em..

u are unusual in the sense u actually want one.. most folks go the other way.. okay u dont get a working rechargeable unless its lithium.. but u probably pay more for the camera in the first place..

rechargeable Ni-Mh batteries and chargers are very cheap.. spare lithiums cost an arm and a leg.. also in an emergency u can use off the shelf batteries when u dont go the lithium route..

when u buy your camera.. budget for a bigger storage card and spare batteries.. thow with some newer cameras the battery life has been extended quite a bit.. so the second requirement might not apply..

in truth there are a plethora of cameras out there that will fulfil your needs.. pointing u at one and then trying to justify why would be difficult..

You don't want an Li-ion battery, they are a pain in the neck, and not needed in such cameras. Trog is right that you can get ni-mh and ni-cd's much cheaper and right off the shelf at any store when ever you need them.

You are going to have to budget at lest twice what you have in order to afford a camera that uses Li-ion batts.

    Good luck,

that is interesting, thanks. It is just that I have seen all these threads about people who only get like 15 shots out of their camera and then have to change the battery. But I was looking at the Casio Exilm EX-Z40, the manufacturers site says that it shoots around 360 shots per charge on a Li-Ion... By the way, is that camera any good?

Once again, thank you guys so much for the help!

yes its okay... its small thow.. thats why it comes with lithiums..

but u dont need lithiums to get decent battery life.. a set of rechargeable Ni Mh will give u at least as many if not more shots per recharge.. having said that the camera would have to be a little larger to accomodate AA batteries.. rechargeable or otherwise..

the 15 shot stuff u have been reading is nonsense.. 200 plus (average) would be more accurate with one of todays cameras..

I had a minolta dimage 7i that I got around 400 shots per charge from. The ppl that say they only get 15 shots per set are trying to use regular alkaline batteries. Just because they fit doesn't make them the correct power source. I'da been lucky to get 15 shots with a fresh set of alkies' in that 7i, it was a major battery hog.
