which camera

well i want to get into photography and i started to look around but im overwhelmed by how many choices. what my question is is what is a fairley good entry level camera that is a little better that the basic digital camera and it needs to be pretty cheap.

I don't know but those that do will want to know your definition of cheap.
Are you thinking compact or digital slr?
Also, what type of photography....landscapes, portraits, nature and wildlife, general?

The powershot G11 is a great point and shoot. But entry level can mean a lot of things.

Yeah, "entry level" and "general purpose" don't really hone in on anything specifically. If you tell us a budget, or a physical size you are wanting to deal with that would help narrow down some of the choices.

Really, entry level cameras can be between $100 and $700, ranging from a cheap GE digicam to a Canon T2i.1.

I've had good luck with Canon point-and-shoots, if that is what you mean by "entry level" and "general use". I've had 3 so far, and they all seemed to work well with some good features, and nice color rendition. But as said above, cheap and entry level are relative terms!

At this price I would consider the Sony A550. It has many features that will allow you to experiment and see in what directions you want your photography to grow (unless video is a must). A fair viewfinder, two modes of Live View, and In-body image stabilization so that all your lenses are stabilized. It would be my choice at the moment. - TF

The Nikon D5000 has seemed to get some great reviews and response from many of it's owners. A friend of mine just got a D3000 and loves it, but she's also just shooting her family. Seeing how the D5000 shares a lot with the D90 (the next step in the Nikon line) I would have to say that it's a very capable camera for the money. Here are some sites to get hands on reviews.

P.S. Don't forget to visit your local camera store to pickup and play with the cameras. You can also run by Bestbuy or something similar for a little more informal and generally not so pushy experience JUST to check out the cameras. And you might want to read through this thread and forum for some good ideas on where to buy from.
