buying a digital camera

Hi all,
I am planning to buy a digital camera for domestic use in the range of Rs 10,000 to Rs 16000.
I hope anyone of you who is an expert or know well about digital cameras can answer my queries and suggest me a suitable model.
My queries are,
1. I have heard Sony and Canon are best. Which one to buy among the two and which model no?
2. In sony, i was told Carl Zies lens is better. Any idea how is the Sony lens and Sony G lens. Because for a similar price sony cameras with Sony lens or Sony G lens cameras offer optical zoom of 7 to 10 x ( Super zoom), whereas Sony cameras with Carl Zeiss lens offer only 4x. So is it worth going for Superzoom with Sony or G lens or settle to Carl zeis lens camera with only 4 x zoom?

star123 - sorry no one answered your question yet. I've moved it to our digital cameras forum where it will hopefully get more attention. I am in the USA and I'm not sure how prices in India differe from here but I did the currency conversion and you're looking at a camera in the $350 dollar range. That's plenty of money to buy a great compact camera. Right now my favorite compacts are what I call "pocket superzooms." They have 10x or more zoom, great features, and they fit in a pants pocket. A whole bunch of new superzoom cameras have been announced since I published that guide. Those cameras should be hitting stores in the next month or so. But I still think any of the cameras I listed in the guide will be great.
