Best camera for money?

Right now I have a sony dsc-h10. Im ready for an upgrade. Was thinking about the sony alpha dslr. But they are 650+ dollars. Is there another camera thats better than mine but not that expensive. I take pictures of pets, food photography, travel etc. Just personal use, not a professional.

I think that the Sony A500 with the kit lens is a very good buy at $520.
