Lightbulb $300 to spend , what to get?

Hello everyone , new to the commuinity. Hoping to get some opinions on what camera I should buy.

I need to get a new camera in 2 days. I have about $300 to spend.

I am leaning towards a SLR-like camera bc I like the long optical zooms.
I was thinking about getting Canon PowerShot S5 IS , since it is on sale at Circuit City for $300 or maybe a Fujifilm s1000fd.

My usage is basic photography , landscapes . friends , maybe some night shots.

Can someone suggest a good camera , that's in my price range?

Oh and it needs to be at local places like bestbuy and circuitcity , so I can pick it up tommorrow.

That's a very good deal for the S5 IS. It's a very nice camera with a good zoom - lots of features - and the IQ is very good. I owned this camera and was very happy with it. You might want to see how it "feels" in your hands if you can get to Circuit city and look at it before you buy it. It's very light weight, but a bit larger than a pocket P&S.

BTW, if you are a member of the AAA, you can get another 10% off at Circuit City.

    Thanks Liz,

Would the Fuji s1000fd be a better choice? It's $50 cheaper and has 10mp.

I don't know......I never heard of it before - and can't find any reviews. It does not have IS as far as I can tell.

Here is more info - check the features and specs.....

Yes, I think they always honor a 10% discount for AAA members. I don't know if there are exceptions, but I've seen people use it for many cameras.

The only glitch with CC is their return policy - I think they don't allow for returns if you even "opened the box" without charging 15% or more restocking fee - unless you've bought their "insurance" and even then you have to exchange it. Unless that policy has very recently changed. I had a bad experience with them a couple of years ago due to their policy.

The S5 is an excellent camera.

Yeah I picked up the s5 , it was for a friend.

Circuit City was out of them , but Best Buy matched the price.
