Camera Problem: Screen black with white lines

HI all,

I was just wondering if there's anyone out there who can give me some idea about that's wrong my camera, a Canon Powershot A70.

The problems are when I am trying to take pictures. The view screen on the camera is extemely dark but I will occasionally get a couple of light bars/lines going across the screen. Basically it's looking like a TV that's broken. The thing that is confusing me though is that I am sure it wasn't working, then it worked for a while, then it went back to not working again. So I'm unsure if there is someway I can fix this issue.

Viewing pictures is fine so I know the screen is OK. Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong? I'm sure this will turn out to be a "take it to a repair shop" job but I would prefer not to do that as I believe taking it to a Canon repair centre is going be v. expensive

Unfortunately, this type of problem requires a repair shop to look at it. There is no way to diagnose the problem from afar. Canon will give you an estimate, it may not (hopefully) be as expensive as you believe.

Before you send it off I would suggest trying a new set of batteries. Probably won't make a difference but its worth a try. My screen will not come on after taking a picture to preview it if the battery is getting low but will work if I look through the pictures. Since you say there are lines on the screen you probably have a different problem but trying the batteries won't coast much to see.

Check the Canon site-there is a "recall on several models", the A70 being one of them. Think it is a bad sensor and will probably replace for free, this is true of several different camera makes other than Canon also.
