Short film shot on 550D wins "Image and Sound" Short Film Award, Check it out.

    Hey everyone!!

This short film I recently made with some friends in Wellington, New Zealand was entered in a 48 Hour film making competition. It won "Sexiest Film (Image and Sound)" Award, from 150 other entrants.

Please check it out here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSVPFNgNojc

The entire thing was shot on my 550D with mostly a 50mm 1.8, sometimes the standard 18-55mm lens. Edited in Premiere.

    That is fantastic!

I recently bought a 550d kit primarily for video at work. I wish I had one at home now!

I love the colour of your film. did you do that in camera or in post?

do you have more shorts to share? we would love to see them, especially in the digital video forum. I used to be anti hybrid cameras but I have completely changed my mind recently. My only gripe with the 550 is that there is no autofocus in video mode.

    Cheers Skyman.

It was graded in premiere, because of the time constraints with the 48 hours competition we had to give the overall video one grade setting which ruined some shots, but made others look great.

This is the first proper thing we've made on the 550d, working on some music videos soon, absolutely loving it. Though you can check out some of my other work on http://www.eep.co.nz

Auto focus i guess would be handy for just recording memories and stuff with family, but i would never ever shoot anything seriously with autofocus, it's not an issue for me at all.

    thanks for the kind words!

Nice work! It's so amazing to think video of that caliber can come from a DSLR, and not even the high and mighty 5D. Keep it up, I love your style.

I tend to shoot manual focus as well, but a lot of the time my 550d is being used by people who know very little about video and so they with either move the camera and throw the subject out of focus or the subject will move in the frame and that will bring them out of focus and they don't think to adjust for it. I bought the 18-200 is to go with it as a general purpose lens and I was pleasantly suprised at the image quality. I haven't had the time yet, but I want to experiment with my primes on it. espcially my 200mm 2.8L - ultra shallow DOF here we come! my 135mm 2.8sf (I am curious to see how dreamy the soft focus will look - it could be very good for weddings and babies) and my 24mm short sharp and light what more could you want?

Re: Short film shot on 550D wins "Image and Sound" Short Film Award, Check it out.

    Hi guys,

First, know I'm not a proffessional protographer :P I really know very little about cameras, just the basics.

I'm looking forward to buying a "Point and Shoot Camera", something simple and that all family members can use. But, there's something... we like quality A LOT.

What I'm looking for is a camera with the next specs:

    ◦good MegaPixels (between 12 to 14)
    ◦good image quality
    ◦wide angle
◦a fast shooter (we hate waiting for the camera to process the pic, we would like the shot to shot rate to be under 2 secs)
◦a minimum flash recharge time (less than 3.5 secs)
    ◦1 flash shoot
    ◦panoramic pictune feature
    ◦720 HD video capture
    ◦decent battery life
    ◦compact and slim design

At first I had in mind buying the Canon PowerShot SD720 or the SD1300, but I realized it didn't have the panoramic option, and also its shot to shot rate with full flash was 8 secs (a lifetime....). Next, I got interested in Nikon CoolPix S570, wich did have the panoramic feature, but the the videos weren't such as good as the Canon's, and the shot to shot rate was also a problem.

The thing is, I used to have a Kodak V705 like a year ago, and... oh man.... I loved that camera, it had EVERYTHING I wrote in the list above (of course, a year ago, point and shoot cameras just didn't have 720 HD video capture or 12 MP pictures).

So I though... maybe I should get the newer version of that camera, and right now I'm almost pretty sure that's the camera I want. I'm talking about the Kodak Easyshare V1273 or the V1253. The first one I got dissapointed about the reviews (they say its battery life only lasts like 100 shots, since the touch screen drains a LOT of battery). The second one (the V1253) may have a better battery life, but I've seen a couple of reviews that say its picture are not so good....

So, please, can anyone help me about buying the right camera with all the features above i'm looking for? Is the Kodak V1253 Okay?

    Thank you guys.

    Sincerely,
    Juanmi

PD: My budget its around 200 to 250 US dollars.... as you can see, these cameras I mentioned don't cost more than US$220.00

    Wow, wow, WOW!

That was awesome! Your have a great eye and the editing is really good. It absolutely held my attention all the way through and the story was great. Congratulations on the award. It's definitely well deserved.

I'd love it if you told us a bit about how you planned and executed this film. I mean, this is a photography site and one of the things we all want is to learn from each other. One of the things I'm most interested in is focus technique with video. I've got a 7D and the focus strategy for video is so different from still photos, which is my background. I was too distracted by the actual story to pay much attention to your technique. But did you do all static shots or did you zoom or refocus while filming? Also, what special video accessory equipment did you use?

    Thanks a lot for sharing!
