Problem with lens

My Canon Digital Rebel XT will accept an old Canon zoom lens and take manual photos but it will not use the auto focus. What is happening? Do i need a new Digital zoom lens for the auto focus to work?

Which lens? Is it an "autofocus" lens?

Well, Is the AF/MF switch on AF? Have you tried cleaning the contacts on the lens? Does it auto focus on another camera? What lens is it and who made it? Rarely people have issues with older lenses not working on newer bodies, but it does happen.
