Yes. The image quality blows the 55-250mm away.

But remember you add on weight and give up range to get that benefit. The 55-250 is a great, lightweight consumer lens.

You may want to consider renting the 70-200 first to get a feel for it before buying it.

I think you misunderstood me. You get more depth-of-field with the crop sensor camera and less with the fulll frame. For me and my 7D this is good. It gives me more DOF focus padding when I'm shooting a mountain biker or skier in action.

Yeah. I don't mean to, though. You should consider that I get to use all kinds of cameras and I make the conscious decision to go with the APS-C sensor because of my experience. It's not like I don't understand. I have found that there really are practical benefits to the APS-C format. I shot with the full-frame 5D Mk II a whole bunch before the 7D came out and aside from the image quality difference, I am much happier with the 7D.

some people said the tamron is good but the focus is slow compare to canon but its good for low light f2.8.

I don't know what percentage of usage will be for wildlife photography. I'm assuming a fairly large percentage since 200mm is a bit too long for the other types that you mentioned.

For wildlife, 200mm is going to be too short. Even a 300mm on a crop body is too short if you intend to get into it at some point in the near future. So if you really wanted to buy a lens geared more for wildlife, I suggest saving up and buying something that will be more in the focal length that you will need.

Oki I really have decided to get this lens also looking for a cheap monopod to support this non-IS lens because I dont want to carry my tripod every time. My uncle and I are planning to go to Virginia water next week so probably monopod should be alright to carry around instead of heavy tripod O_o

Used monopod if its possible.

I'd recommend a ballhead with a quick release for it. Snap on to use, snap off and hey, I got a good walking stick

I think the widest aperture you'll get on that lens is F4 (not zoom out) up to F5.6 when its fully zoom out.

The 70-200mm F4L lens have a constant aperture of F4 even its fully zoom out.

Yep, the aperture will vary on the zoom for the 70-300mm.

Which is a very nice lens, I understand it to be much better than the 55-250, but the image quality is not as good as an L lens.

I really like the picture, because I plan to do a portrait of my family photo in particular that will be a new member coming in March I know some of his long journey.

K I guess we are looking at different purposes. I went into henrys yesterday with a buddy that is pro, and I tried out all 3 lenses:

1) tamron 70-200 2.8, my first impression was OMG it's huge! He told me all 2.8 lenses of that focal length will be that big. Loving the 2.8 at that price range, but not practical at all for me. I wanted something for walking around, no monopod required.
2) canon 70-300 4-5.6 with IS. Much more reasonable size and what I expected. Snapped a few pics of this as well, and was really happy with sharpness and image quality. Tried switching IS on and off and saw a big difference.
3) canon 70-200 4l, non is. They had the is version but out of my price range. My shots blurred at max 200 but the rep pointed out I would need to work on my breathing techniques and stance (I'm a week new). So you can probably hold a steadier hand than I. I was very amazed at the speed of autofocus and how quiet it was. It wasn't really that much faster but wow it was quiet. Great picture quality if you get a steady shot.

I ended up buying the 70-300 4-5.6 with IS. I valued the range more (200 just wasnt enough) and at my skill level, IS was very important. At 200mm the lense gave me an f-stop of 5.

So I hope the above brings some benefit to you.
I guess in the end, actually going in and trying these lenses made making the decision very easy.

that is a very nice handheld testing with those lenses, indeed that 70-300 4-5.6 have a very reasonable price along with the IS feature maybe each of us have different taste of features. Monopod wouldn'y hurt my arm carrying it nor tripod just its a hussle sometimes carrying a tripod so decided to get a monopod.

I know you don't have to hold your breathing for long because of this non-IS lens but in that few seconds you body have a possibilies to shake in any case.

Question:
How about the others what do you value? as GetSpeed said he value the range.

still haven't had a chance to touce the 70-200mm F4 L..haha I know I've said this already just temped to touch it and get it but can't go elsewhere yet because of college O_o.
