    New 30D..... is dead.

Yep... my new 30d all of 3 weeks old went belly up two days into a week long vacation to Cancun, MX... Excellent timing.

Oh well... now I sit here camera-less....... sent the brick to Canon today.. unfortunately I missed nearly a whole vacation

One minute I was taking photos ... next thing I knew the camera was black would not power on... battery was fine ... would not turn on.. . took the lens off and the CF card.. still nothing.. then I finally got a error 99 .. then nothing again...

Found a camera shop in Cancun... they let me try a brand new battery that they charged before I arrived... zero... tried cleaning contacts, removing internal battery etc...

Called Canon when I got back... they acted as though they knew it was the camera.. they didnt even have me try anything.. said I need to send it in...

Biggest bummer was carrying around a brick on my vacation I was afraid to leave it in the room (not enough room in the safe in our room)...

thanks for letting me vent ....

Sorry to hear about that. I went on vacation once and took my old Canon 10QD Film camera thinking it was working. When I developed all the rolls, only half came out. I was having shuttter problems and didn't even know it. It really spoils a vacation for some.

It has been a brick in the closet ever since.

Please let us know what Canon finds out.

Ahh man that sucks! I just picked up a 30D as well and got it two days before heading out on a week long trip to the east coast. My first day out there I was feeling a bit giddy and jumping around on some rocks on the coast when I stepped on a wet one by accident. Down I went and luckily(?) I had the sense to hold the camera up and took it hard on my hip and leg but managed to keep the camera from a quick death.

Hope they get it back to you quickly.

    Re: New 30D..... is dead.

Hi I had this error before, and I found a great solution for it you just have to clean the lenses with a pencil eraser. I found it on a tech support site that explain better how to do it...

here is the page for the Err99 Solution
They have another page for Canon 30D as well, just search for it. But the answers on the err99 are not so good and are older....

    Good luck

    Re: New 30D..... is dead.

A little tip: don't send gear to Canon between the Kentucky Derby and Brickyard 400 or around the times of the Daytona 500 or the Super Bowl as the techs get behind with them having to travel to these events to work on Pro gear. Basicaly things get backed up when three or four techs are tied up cleaning our gear and doing some repairs on site.
The past three weeks they have been at Indy and will be there this week and race day too.

    Re: New 30D..... is dead.

Well.. it looks like the camera has shipped .. Should be here by the end of the week...

To be honest.. this is my first and possibly last Canon product... nothing wrong with the camera's features etc.. etc.. etc... but... first I'm not really too forgiving when a product croaks in the first 3 weeks of use (maybe 300 clicks) .. should I say.. i'm underwhelmed by such an event...

Service seems just ok.. I'm not raving about that either... if Canon wishes to sacrifice the service of its consumers.. for the benefit of its "pros" .. so be it.. I will shop in the future with that consideration...

I'm not trying to bash Canon here.. I'm simply stating my opinion of the whole deal.. they havent wronged me per se' .. but like I said... I'm underwhelmed...

I understand these things happen.. but imho every sale is an opportunity.. and every failure is an even larger opportunity for Canon to not only make things right.. but to keep or lose a future customer. This customer is indifferent. Maybe I'll buy another Canon .. dunno.. but I will certainly take a VERY close look at their competitors when I get ready for another purchase ...

    Re: New 30D..... is dead.

I had bought a 1D and it was DOA before a single shot, it wouldn't power up. The dealer replaced it immediately without any hassel's. It happens, but the other 1D's I had never had an issue although one needed AF after using a non-Canon lens for two years.
As for production issues, you find Canon doing what Nikon has, where knowing there is an issue they continue production and sales, selling bodies they know will fail and forcing customers to send them in for repairs. This went on for three consecutive new releases. At the same time Canon had shipped lenses that turned out to be faulty, they stopped production and recalled the lenses and replaced them once they found the problem. Nikon just kept selling bad bodies. One paper bought three new Nikon bodies for a photographer and all three failed in a two week period, they dumped the Nikons for Canons and never had another issue. Nikon service is no where near as good as Canon service, it took 12 weeks for the paper to get their three bodies back

As for Canon supporting the "pros", Nikon does too, just not at the number of events and size that Canon does, but then Canon does sell a lot more cameras than Nikon, there is a reason for that.. And both take pro gear gear ahead of non-pro for service, whether there is an event or not. Even pros have to wait some times, I had to wait 8 weeks to get my 1D back due to a parts shortage, and during that time I ended up getting a second body so I wouldn't go through that again.
The fact that your camera died isn't a reason to dump Canon, neither is the timing, it could have been an issue getting parts and not being due to a lack of techs to do repairs. I mentioned it as it could be just one reason for the time it took, but in reality 3 weeks isn't all that bad, and it's a lot shorter than the 8 weeks I had to wait.

    Re: New 30D..... is dead.

    My 30D is BACK ! Yea !

    Not so fast..........

So I recieved the camera from service center in Irvine today... I open the box and this is what the service letter says on what they did:

"We have examined the product according to your request, and, it was found that the PCB assembly was inoperative so that the power supply did not operate properly. The PCB assembly(DC/DC) was replaced. Other inspection and cleaning and parts replacements were carried out."

Cool... so that sounds reasonable I guess..

    Now the kicker...

So get the camera out and find that the battery is wrapped separately from the camera. So I open the plastic bag to get it out.. it has a note in with it. The note says:

    "Dear Customer.

We repair your Camera, than we check the Camera completed. Please do not use this battery. It is broken, Please replace it with a new one.

    Thank you!"

Lovely I must say.... camera not 3 weeks old needs a new battery. In fact.. I dont think I charged that battery but twice.. once when it was brand new.. and once before I left on vacation. Ahem. Yep.. I'm not raving about Canon right now. LOL

Oh well.. now I can order a new battery...
