My Canon 540EZ should STAY or EBAY?

My trusty Canon 540EZ Flash doesn't work with my DSLRs since ATTL is meaningless to the new digital SLRs.

Does anyone know of any Canon or 3rd party accessories to bring this flash back to life?

Can I turn it into a studio stobe with the right attachments?

The flash has been very good to me but I may need to EBAY it if I can't do anything with it.

    Manual

You can still use it in manual or TTL. I had some trouble with mine when I went from the EOS A2E to an EOS 3. But in manual it worked great. Now I have two 550s. But I've held on to my 540 because I can use it as a manual flash or with my PocketWizards. With the radio slaves the 540 is essentially the same as a 550.

Have you checked to see how much you can get for it on ebay? One of the reasons I never sold mine is I figured it wasn't worth enough to deal with.

Re: My Canon 540EZ should STAY or EBAY?

Hmmmm....the thing never fired on my 30D or my DREBEL. I'll try again.

I can get like $100 for it on EBAY. Mine is in pretty good condition. I'd rather convert it to a off camera studio strobe if I can.

I'll check out Pocket Wizards but they seem a bit pricey for something I won't use as often.

    Thanks!

It didn't even fire? It should definitely work in full manual flash mode. That would be lame if Canon disabled it so much that it won't even work in manual mode with newer cameras. I don't know if I've even tried mine with the EOS 1D or 10D. I should see if it works.

the 540EZ worked fine in manual on both m1D (the original) and DRebel so I'd suggest getting your 540 checked out as it should fire.

You can buy a bracket from B&H which you attach to a stand, the flash goes on the top, umbrella through a hole in between and use it like a small studio flash. I did that a couple of years ago, and moved on to proper studio flash heads 18 months ago, so after 6 months of trying to get what I wanted to do with small flash heads and the money I had already spent, I could have got a one studio flash head setup. If you are serious about doing portraiture work etc, then really look at Alien Bees they are the Bees Knees (pun intended) for the price not a lot comes close with all the features and the accessories that you can get for them. If they were readily available here in Australia I would have gone that way with my setup and it would have been a lot cheaper as well. Distance wise, warranty repairs would have been a nightmare, would have become a chuck and replace items really.

Thanks Peter! Exactly what I was looking for. I was on B&H yesterday looking for this thing but never came close.

I'll check out Alien Bees as well.
