Getting "busy" message with new lens

I have a Rebel XT which I bought along with I think was a 28-105mm Canon lens. I recently purchased the Tamron 18-270mm with vibration control. When I now use any of the automatic settings I get a "busy" notification after each shot I take that lasts 2-3 seconds. If I move to the manual settings, the camera never says busy and can rapid fire shots at will. Can someone explain this?

How are the "busy" shots turning out?
