Does anyone use the Canon EOS-1D Mark III

Just shopping around for my next camera and was wondering if anyone has one.

Don't have one since it doesn't fit my needs, but I have use one a few times. Great camera, but I prefer my 1D MkIII since my main focus is sports.

I don't have one, but I know a bit about it and I've used both the EOS-1D Mark III and the full frame 5D Mk II so I know about the 1D body and shooting with a full frame camera. In my opinion, full frame probably isn't worth the size, weight and expense for most photographers. What are you shooting with now? Why are you looking at the 1Ds Mark III? Have you handled a 1D body?

Right now I have the Canon Xt. I held the older film version a long time ago.
The main reason I would like to get one is of the higher ISO and the faster fps drive.
I can't remember how it was said to me, but it's easier to blow up a full frame than a 35mm frame without exposing (showing up) the grain as well when printed out.

Coming from and Xt I would suggest that you look at something like the 5D if you are looking for full frame. Higher ISO with excellent quality. Virtually the same fps. Newest processor. The 1Ds MkIII is an outstanding piece of studio gear, but the 5D MkII is also an outstanding piece of gear that any photographer could make good use of. Here is a comparison of the two.

But so far I'm starting to lean towards the 5D even if it is a little slower on the drive than the 1D

One thing to keep in mind when switching to digital is what type(s) of photography you intend to use it for. While all bodies can do the job, some are better suited for various types. Part of this was done in the film days, not so much by the body, but by the choice of film. Define you photographic interest and then research the bodies best suited for what you are wanting to do.

What do you shoot the most? If you want speed, I'd choose the 1D Mark III over either the 1Ds or the 5D Mk II. The 1D Mark III has excellent image quality and the speed can't be beat.

As for image quality and enlargements, keep in mind that your XT is three generations old now. Yes, a full frame sensor will always have the lowest noise because the pixels are larger. But that doesn't mean you actually need that kind of quality. I don't think I need it. Take a look at the XTi, XSi, 40D and 50D studio samples in our Digital Camera Sample Gallery. They're all posted at full res so you can download them and print them out at whatever size you want. Think about what you really need and not about what's best - unless money is no object. Then you need to think about weight
