Canon must have lens?

Hello. I am new to DSLR and photography in general. And I am not trying to be a professional, but I want some decent photos for my 2 girls scrap books. I bought a Canon Rebel T2i with the 18-55 lens. I am looking to get a couple more lens but really want some advice from people who know about whats good and not. My daughters play sports so most pictures are going to be of sports and family vacations and holidays. What I was looking at getting are these. Please tell me what you think is the best choice. I am reading that EF-S lens are no good but Canon says they are made specifically for my camera. I want a good distance zoom lens and one that is good indoors

Is Canon EF-S 55 mm - 250 mm F/4.0-5.6 IS Lens a good choice or is there a better one for distance

The 55-250 is a very good performer for what it costs. For a starter kit you far this combo should serve you well. After a while you may want to look at upgrading from the 18-55. Looking forward to some of your shots with this setup.

I think that the people who say that EF-S lenses are no good are hoping one day to go to a camera with a full-frame film format sensor. Stick with a lens that is designed for your camera. Most of the EF-S lenses are very good and some are excellent. The ones that I would avoid:

- the 18-55 without IS (the version prior to yours). This was notoriously bad and may have contributed to the poor image of EF-S lenses
- the old 17-85 IS which apparently is not very sharp

An alternative to the 55-250 would be to replace your 18-55 with the 18-200. You would just have one very versatile lens to carry round to cover almost anything. However you can't have everything and the 18-200 is probably not as sharp as the 18-55 IS and 55-250 (I have the Nikon equivalent and I use it a lot - in good light).

For indoor sports you really need a tele lens that lets through lots of light because you have to have a fast shutter speed to stop action. Check out the 50mm f1.8 which is not very tele but it's cheap. If you think you need a longer lens then I think there is a 85mm f1.8 which is not too expensive (I have the Nikon equivalent)

Thank you very much for the info. The I don't think I will need too much tele on indoors. My daugthers play outdoor sports. I am going for the 55-250 EFS and a 50mm 1.8 for indoors. I look forward to getting some pics and I will upload some to get some opinions. Thanks again.

I presently have the kit IS 18-55 & 55-250 and my next step (assuming I can afford to in the immediate future) is bumping to the 17-85 IS USM & 70-300 IS USM. I've read really good reviews on both of them, but if there's an older 17-85 out there that's not as sharp I'd like to not throw money at it.

I read a couple of reviews in French magazines when the 15Mpix then 18Mpix sensor cameras first came out. They compared the results with the 17-85 on the preceding generation of 12Mpix sensors and the new generation and observed that they were getting no more detail with the new generation of cameras. The resolution on the 17-85 was too poor to make the most of the sensor.

The 17-85 has been replaced by the 15-85 which is much better. And twice as expensive..

I checked up on photozone.de and the performance of the 17-85 doesn't look that bad. It's much better than the 18-55 II (non-IS) but really not as good as the latest 18-55 IS kit lens.

Check out the reviews here and you will see that even up to 2007 (age of your 30D) some people said that it was soft while others had no complaints.

It depends on how big you want to print. If you want to go no bigger than 8x10 inches then the 17-85 might be enough.

My most-used Canon lens is the EF-S 18-200mm IS zoom. It's also the lens I recommend the most to new Canon DSLR shooters. I use it for tradeshows, travel, outdoor/landscape - and yes - sports. I use it for tons of mountain bike, ski and snowboard photos. When I bought it, I didn't think it would measure up. But as I said, it's my most-used lens. The camera I bought it with is long gone (EOS 50D), but I don't see myself ever selling the 18-200mm zoom.

Hello Everyone. I just purchased a Canon 60D with a EF-S 18-200 IS lens. This summer, I will be going to Alaska and want to be able to come home with some great pictures of wildlife (bear, whales, birds, moose, dall sheep, etc). I will be traveling to a bunch of different locations, including the inside passage, Icy Strait Point, Seward, Denali National Park, etc and may be going to Katmai National Park.

Does anyone have suggestions of what additional lens/lenses I should buy? Is there any other gear I should get? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Seriously, by all accounts the 18-200 is a great do-all lens.Personally I'd want a longer tele for shooting moose because the only way to safely shoot moose is from a distance! I can't think of any particular lens that would give you much more affordable focal length other than the 70-300 IS USM. (Not the 75-300 which I've found to be pillow-soft.)

Hrm. Can't post links yet. :-\ Anyway, I think a nice $14,000 lens would help.
