will this flash work?

I just got a flash that used to be my grandfathers. it is a promaster FTD 6500M. Will this work with my canon rebel xs?? And if so, is there any special settings that I need to change??

Without looking at it, I'm guessing the flash is TTL
and your camera needs the latest generation which is E-TTL.
I have a 5 year old Sigma flash and my XSi won't recognize it.
I was a bit bummed when I found out.

According to the manual at http://www.promaster.com/books/Instr...s/FTD6500M.pdf it comes in versions for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, or Minolta.

But it only supports TTL, which judging by the age of the flash is what Canon had back then.

I'd go read the manual online, and check the model letters on the flash, seems that it wasn't one flash that worked on all cameras but it had to be the right version for each manufacturer.

yeah, I know it was use for a canon. It was my grandfathers. I believe he used it on a eos 605 or something like that. I did score a nice 50mm f1.6 prime lens though. My grandmother has no use for his older camera stuff. he has some older olympus cameras as well as lenses.

It will work on the XS if you tape the TTL contacts (leaving on the center pin which fires the flash). But the flash will be manual only. If it does not have manual controls, it will fire at full power only. However, if your Rebel G uses the original TTL, then it will be compatible with that.
