    Authorized Repair Service??

Does Canon have a list of authorized repair service centers? There is a camera repair in Northern New Jersey that I used a few years ago. About a year ago I asked if they were a Canon authorized repair service. Their reply was yes we are, but we are not authorized to do digital.

Today I took my 50mm/f1.4 lens in (without 350XT) to give me an estimate on repair - the autofocus stopped working. They had changed hands and the receptionist told me that "the new owner does all repairs, including digital." I asked if they were authorized by Canon. She said yes, they even do warranties.

They couldn't look at it today because they had no body to check it on. The repairman said he would bring one in tomorrow and have the estimate in the morning. I don't mind taking the 50mm lens there, but would hesitate to bring my camera or newer lenses still under warranty.

Is there a list of authorized repair centers somewhere? Getting around their website is very complicated (at least for me) and I have no clue how to find it.

    Thanks.

After you tell the website what product you need service on, you will see the following link. I'm not sure if there is a more direct method.

    Re: Authorized Repair Service??

    Thanks Manacsa,

It didn't list any around NJ or even NY - not sure the search engine is working. However, I called the 800 number and they were most helpful. The service tech told me the place I went to is not "authorized" to do warranty work on digital equipment. He explained Canon is specific as to where you can take digital equipment under warranty. Jamesburg NJ is the only one around here. So that answers my question.

I'm really glad I called as I won't take anything else to that place.

    Re: Authorized Repair Service??

In addition to how some of these "service centers" work. The camera store near my work is always taking in Canon for repair but they are not authorized to fix anyting. They act as a "middle man" and send out the equipment to an authorized canon service center. As the "middle man" they add a handling fee. You might as well go to the front counter of the post office and save money.

Glad you got what you needed to know.

Hope you get a reasonable quote on that lens.

Thanks. I'm very grateful. Canon 800# people were so good - I only waited about 2-3 minutes and got 2 excellent people - and very nice.

I'll let you know what the estimate is.

The nearest CANON FACTORY SERVICE CENTER IS in Jamesburg

    100 Jamesburg Road ,
    Jamesburg NJ 08831
    732-521-7007
    Service Counter Hours of Operation: 9am - 4:30pm (local time), M - F

As for the mentioned place of business. I have never dealt with them. As for DIGITAL REPAIRS.....I highly doubt CANON will authorise any outside company to do EOS DIGITAL repairs. Canon has 3 repair centers and only 2 do digital(NJ and CA)

I find it a little interesting that repair shop that is authorized by Canon didn't have a Canon body to test your lens on... Maybe I'm being paranoid, but that throws up a red flag to me.

That's what put the first red flag up in my head too! I wasn't really too impressed with the place, but I'm trying to get an estimate of what the lens will cost to get fixed. He's supposed to bring in a body tomorrow to test it on, then give me the estimate. That will be interesting.

Next time ask me about the issue and I will walk you though the steps of figuring out simple issues. His estimate will be $100+ I bet, because they sound shady

The autofocus in this lens has been dying for a few months. I noticed about a month ago that I had to press the shutter button a few times before the lens would focus. At first I thought it was the lighting, but it happened more & more frequently. Then last week it stopped focusing altogether. I love this lens........I use it quite a bit for street photography, portraits, flowers, and I use it when I want a light weight day. It's a great little lens.

Paul - thanks.....I'm sure it will be more than I'm going to pay.

Well if you don't get it fixed, use it as a MF lens unless the focus ring is at fault. Did you try cleaning the contacts on the lens?

    Update

Update - it's the main circuit. Cost $165 minimum to fix.

I can get a new one with rebate for $100 more......

I thought it might be a serious problem because of the way it acted. It gave me problems every so often for a few months, then it slowed down quite a bit, then frequently wouldn't focus at all unless I pressed the shutter button numerous times........then it died.

    Thanks everyone

    Re: Update

    Paul,

Wow! I didn't know KEH does repairs, and was glad to hear this.

After reading your post, I called KEH to get more information, etc. and to explain the specific problem. The repair tech stated that their website doesn't cover all repairs and my specific problem is a major repair and would not be included in the estimates online. When I asked her for an estimate, she said they don't give specific estimates over the phone, but said it could be about $150. I would have to ship it there to get an accurate estimate.

It's really not worth it - with shipping, etc. I have a friend who offered to buy it from me for a minimal price and try to fix it himself. I think I may go that route since I know him.

ETA: I just spoke to Canon and decided to send it to Jamesburg for a free estimate. The Canon repair tech said they might give me an estimate much less than the place I took it to. What have I got to lose? $4 in shipping - they ship it back free even if not fixed.

I must say I've gotten excellent A+ customer service from Canon - all 3 times I've called lately.

Paul, thanks so much for going through all of this trouble. I'm most grateful.

FYI, there are only two actual authorized service centers in the US for Canon, one in NJ and one in Ca. A lot of places claim to do warranty work, but thats a sticky subject with Canon if they end up with it and someone else was "in it".

As for Canon service, don't be surprised if they don't clean the gear before returning it. I got my 1D back with finger prints and dirt on the mirror and IR Filter. Canon said they would be happy to clean it if I wanted to send it back, at MY cost of course....yeah right, so they can sit on it for 8 more weeks?

There are only 2 for Digital, as Paul said. There are many authorized Canon service centers around the country, but it depends on what you need fixed.

When my film Rebel got wet, I called Canon and they told me the closest place that was authorized to fix it was in Madison WI. Only about an hour from me. When I called the place in Madison and told them what the problem was, they said they couldn't fix it. I ended up sending it to another authorized repair shop in Elk Grove Illinois.
