From AA to Lithium ion powered-DIY

HI,
Iam new to these forums but experienced in the ways of th camera.
Iam not sure if many of you are interested In DIY, but i have a camera that runs on two AA batteries and a Cr2016 battery(iam not sure what this does). the point that Iam trying to get to is can use lithium ion by soldering it or something?, it chugs the AA power like nothing, so I figured that a rechargable battery would be best,
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

The Victim: A Canon Powershot A300, 16mb Compact flash, 3.2 Megapixels,5.1x digital zoom, yeah i know i should have upgraded already.
