Loupey - I checked out imaging resource, http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E50D/E50DA.HTM and they said gapless microlens make the difference as well, heres a pic -

Thats really cool how they did that, looks like it worked quite well.

    I then cropped out a 3" x 3" section of each image.

    Does that help?
Yes, thanks Loupey. I will often print at 240dpi at 13x19 from my 20D. To get there, I have to resample the image. I like the idea of getting there with no resampling atrifact added in. And while the noise levels seem to be similar, I have gotten excellent results with the 20D at ISO 800 and it seems the 50D would be the same. Both are very nice images by the way. Thanks for the comparison.

Greg - glad it was helpful

Here is another pair of examples at high ISO. Both the 40D and 50D images are straight out of camera jpegs at pixel level crops.

I wish that I had set the 50D image with the High ISO NR set to Off so that I could make a direct comparison. Despite the 1 stop difference in ISO, do they look similar?

Judge for yourself. Is it worth the upgrade?

I actually think that the images from the 50D look better. The "graininess" is less "colorful", and IMHO, looks more like film.

I assume that the majority of people who are considering the 50D are sports shooters. So I shot these Friday night HS shots for some more comparisons.

This time, I turned the in-camera noise reduction OFF, set it to ISO 3200 and shot away. Subsequent post processing with PS including noise reduction. Cropped slightly for these.

Don't know about the AF performance as these and the earlier shots were all manually focused. (I wouldn't be able to compare against the AF of the previous bodies anyway)

    Last Samples

These are the last samples from me - you will have to try one out for yourselves.

A variety pack here. For kicks I did switch to AF once (the first image - I tracked the rider on the left).

All in all, a very competent camera. The two main improvements over the 40D being the ISO performance at HIGH ISO's and the clearer/brighter LCD.

So the need to upgrade is not a must unless you are consistently pushing the ISO boundary IMO.

    Happy shooting

Can I ask what lens and at what settings you used for the horse pic`s , I used af at weekend and found with 70-200 2.8 some pics were quite poor , a bit over expossed if anything .

    Sure:

    Lens: EF 24-105mm f/4L IS
    ISO: 400
    Shutter Speed: 1/3000s
    Aperture: f/4
    AF: AI Servo AF
    Exposure: Manual

Shot wide open to check focus accuracy.

What exposure mode where you in (M, Av, Tv,...) and what kind of scene was the shot? Also, what metering pattern was it set for? I don't know the metering pattern I shoot, I always left it at the setting that shows a rectange with two semi-circles inside of it with a sold circle inside that. Never found a need to ever change this on any of my cameras.

outside , bright sunshine , tried sports mode (better results) , also TV , set at shutter about 800 left meter pattern normal , although don`t think af was right at time , have since changed to A1 servo.

Check your exposure compensation setting. I believe that, in any/all of the AE modes, the EC setting is adjusted with the thumbwheel. Normally this setting should be centered (null) and should be easy to check on the top LCD panel when you press the shutter release button halfway.
