But the main concern I had, continous AF, seems to be no problem at all. Unlike the first Digital Rebel, AI Servo is available in all exposure modes with the Rebel XTi.
I have been looking for a replacement for my 10D for awhile. Mostly, what I want, in order of imporance to me, is: 1) improved buffer (9 shots get used up fast on the 10D) 2) improved AF, particularly with 2.8 lenses, 3) larger sensor (from 6 to 10 is a big improvement), 4) ETTL-2 (which I assume the Rebel 400 has).

The dust removal system is nice, but I never have really had a dust problem in all these years with my 10D. I am curious to the startup time. I didn't see any mention of it. My 10D takes a second or two to "turn on" which is annoying.

Honestly, the 10D annoys me in more ways than I care to list. It's served me well. But I've had to fight it the whole time. And it's also lost me a fair number of photos. The 10D is fine in the studio. But not for much else that I do. Right now I feel like almost anything current would be better - at least for me.
