Report Your Horror Story to Magazines.

I was looking at some ads in the ShutterBug magazine, and was thinking of calling Broadway Photo about one of their deals but checked this forum first. Good thing I did.

I was so incensed at the thought of being caught in one of these situations myself that I emailed the magazine to ask them why they accepted advertising from shady outfits like Broadway Photo.

They said that if advertisers "have three open complaints in our files they are removed from our publication." They said Broadway Photo had no open complaints. Maybe it would be good to file some complaints with magazines as well as the BBB if you are having problems with a retailer. It might reduce their exposure if they lose advertising, or at least pressure them into living up to their promises.

Sadly Al, that may be one of the reasons photo mags take their advertising. Nobody complains to the mag.......instead they complain to the authorities, which is the first and foremost thing to do. Filing a complaint with a magazine sometimes may not enter into the train of thought, and it should, I think. If more magazines or other advertising outlets get enough outcrys from the consumers, they might think about pulling the ads.

I was just reading the Feb issue of Popular Photography and imaging yesterday, and came across a full page talking about this very topic. The magazine has set up "guidlines" for it's advertisers to follow. Most of the things on the list are the exact same things that the posts I've seen here are complaining about.

Here is a link to the page with the guidlines:

Michael, that's why it's critical that people who've had bad experiences start contacting the mags with their stories. Perhaps P-J could put up a sticky with links to the various contacts at the photo mags, so people can start doing that. I think it's time we consumers start letting our voices be heard.

That is a good idea, but this operation has at least three or more different names that it advertises under. Broadway Photo, A&M, Digital Liquidators, CCI, and I suspect even a few others. They have no storefront, but are run out of a private house with the stock room being a garage locally. If they stop one from advertising, the other are still there and I suspect that they would just come out with a new name and sart again as a new business. Folks, if the deals look too good to be true, they are.

I too am suffering from recent wounds inflicted by the scammers at Broadway Photo. I have taken your advice and have wrttien to the editor at PopPhoto.com to express my concerns about Broadway Photo advertising.

Thank you so much for the idea. I was not sure where to write, but this is the e-mail address I found at PopPhoto:

    editor@popphoto.com.

If anyone has other ideas to help fight this, please post them--thanks.

You can let your voices be heard here. Let the magazines take care of their own business. We already have a very good resource here on the site, with tons of information about dealers. And you're all welcome to add to it anytime you want. The magazines are welcome to check it, too.

It's also interesting to note that the Dealer Feedback forum is one of our busiest in terms of visitors. It doesn't have the most posts, but there are usually more people looking at it than the other forums. People obviously find it a valuable resource.
