Your favorite place to eat thread.

This is about my favorite place to eat in the world. The Varsity in downtown Atlanta. I try not to miss eating here anytime I am in Atlanta. I live about 80 miles away from it and I don't get there as often as I would like. They have Chili Dogs and Onion Rings to die for. And a killer fried apple pie. So I thought it would be great if you would show me your favorite place to eat and tell me why. If you are ever in the Atlanta area it would be well worth your time. But please feel free to show my your favorite eating joint. Maybe next time out I will take a few more pictures to post. With my favorite dish. I have to go back in a couple of weeks so look for more pictures.
    Thanks

CHILI DOGS AND ONION RINGS?????? Awwww Greg you're making me hungry.

I've got a lot of faves, some local, some national. I discovered Fogo De Chao in DC, and I'm hooked. There's one in Chicago, so I need to get over there. There are a couple of places here that serve up pretty good chili-cheese dogs. I'm also a big Philly Cheesesteak guy, and Lenny's here in Kalamazoo is real good. Also enjoy a good omelet for breakfast.

There's just too much I like and not enough time or space to tell you.

    Greg .....

I was in Atlanta and ate at the Varsity about 30 years ago. I think it was on Peachtree Street (but then everything is on Peachtree). Sure didn't look this nice and clean. It was lunchtime and there was a line clear outside the building. When you got to the front of the line you had better be ready to order or else they would send you to the back of the line.
Darned fine dogs tho ... just so many options as to what to have on them.

    drg .....

I would love to spend a few hours at Cafe Chloresterol. Just to sample one of each.

Atlanta has really cleaned itself up since the Olympics were here. This is one on Peachtree st. The also have a Varsity in Kennesaw that is 40 miles closer to me but not the same atmosphere as the original.

I have a co-worker and soon a next door neighbor that'll be in the neighborhood...

This is really a great idea for a thread. I could probably find some shots from awhile back, but I suppose I should go out and shoot some new ones... I've been by Varsity but have not been there. Sounds like good stuff!

Re: Your favorite place to eat thread.

My absolute favorite place to eat is Dominick's on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. This is the true "Little Italy" in New York City, even though many of the Italians have long since moved out and other immigrants have taken up residence. There are still many Italian shops for meats, cheese, breads and pastries, plus some really good restaurants.

Dominick's has a lot of quirks that to me, make the experience all the more enjoyable. When you arrive on a busy Friday or Saturday night, you walk in, tell the bartender how many are in your party and he gives you a number. Then you head upstairs to the lounge to wait for your number to be called. The upstairs lounge seems to have more room than the downstairs restaurant.

Once your number is called you go downstairs and are shown "your" table. Actually, all the seating is communal and you are seated at a long table that can accomodate 8 people.

There is no menu. Your waiter asks what you want. If you have no idea, he will make some suggestions. This is a southern Italian, red sauce place, so don't ask for wild mushroom risotto with cracked pepper, freshly shaved paremsian cheese with truffle oil drissled on top. Order one of the red sauce "standards" or go for something like roast stuffed veal, pork chops with vinegar peppers, or linguine with chopped shrimp and clams. My favorites are the salad served with sharp provolone cheese and roasted peppers, mussels marinara, stuffed artichoke, steak pizziaola, chicken scarpariello, and the linguine mentioned above. Don't bother saving room for dessert because you won't find it here. Although you can end your meal with a shot of espresso and if you ask for some annisette, they will bring the bottle to your table.

If communal sitting and no menu wasn't quirky enough for you, then wait for the "check". Actually, there is no check. When you look totally stuffed, your waiter comes over and asks if you're done. If so, he goes to the bartender. They have a breif conversation and point in your general direction. The waiter comes back and gives you the "number". For example, he'll say "79" or "112". Even if you order the same thing each time you go, it seems like the number is never the same. There is nothing written down and only cash is accepted.

My wife and I love this restaurant and would rather go here for special ocassions than any place else. We even order take out sometimes to augment our Christmas Eve dinner. It's not fancy, it's probably not authentic (I've never actually been to Sicily or even south of Rome) but it's delicious.

    Dominick's

Pathetic? No way! I think it’s totally fine to think your Moms house has the best food. I think my Mom makes the best food. Even my friends think so. As soon as any of them hear, I’m going to my parents house they all want to go with me to try to eat dinner at my Moms. She makes the best Mexican food in California, IMO. She loves to cook and every year for my birthday she makes 3-4 buffet trays loaded with food for my closest 30 friends and me. I have even had friends ask her to cater their birthday get-togethers because they love the food at mine so much. nothing like Moms cooking!

Re: Your favorite place to eat thread.

I don't take pictures in restaurants unless I'm seriously bored. My iPhone is a hoot to play with, so here are some shots I've taken in "favorite" restaurants; i.e. I go there a lot for one reason or another:

pic #1: Bravo! Cucina - Has my favorite "comfort food" -- spaghetti bolognese -- and the restaurant is only a few minutes away from my house. I swear I crave the spaghetti twice a week sometimes. This is the kind of place where I eat at the bar and the bartenders know me, and they take one look at me and say, "the usual?" The only thing that I really change up is which martini I order. One bartender loves "concocting" his own creations for me. This is, I believe, an espresso martini.

pic #2: Bar Louis - Open Late. When I get hungry after a rehearsal, it's often like 11 pm and I don't want to go home and cook. So, it's off to Bar Louis I go, which is also just a few minutes from my house. I don't like the atmosphere as much, and I get really bored whenever I'm there, but hey, it's late-night food of a little bit higher caliber than a greasy spoon diner.

pic #3: Yaffa - my FAVORITE restaurant in the city. They used to make my favorite martini, a hibiscus martini made with earl grey tea and hibiscus vodka, but then they discontinued it. I took my girlfriend there on her birthday last year, and called ahead to ask if they'd please prepare a batch of hibiscus vodka for us as her birthday present. They not only served us the martinis with dinner, they also gave her a bottle of the vodka for her to make her own martinis at home! The food there is spanish/mediterranean and fairly expensive, but soooo good. They're struggling to stay open, unfortunately, in this economy.

pic #4: Bar Louis again. I was really bored that night.
