You. In one shot.

Okay, so most of us have a reason we shoot. So most of us probably have a shot that represents our style/vision/purpose/whatever.

These are two girls I met a few years ago, saw them again recently. There's more on my blog ( http://www.asjblog.typepad.com/ if you want to see them) , but this one is totally me. If I could get this shot (not this particular one, but one that makes me feel like this) from every session, I'd be a happy camper. It's one that I could pick out as me, as an Adina photo, even if it was lined up with 100 other black and white non-traditional children's photos.

anybody else got one? or am I just a wierdo?

Well you might be a weirdo but not "Just" a weirdo when you can shoot like that.

Me? I had pretty much given up photography until I moved to Washington DC and fell in love with the city and monuments. For a long time I tried to get the Washington Monument in every photo I shot; sort of like this one of the Jefferson Memorial.

Ok, as I aluded to a second ago, I don't think I can represent myself in a single shot, as I have several shooting styles that are equally what I am about right now, vision-wise.

Still, this older shot of porn publisher Al Goldstien does represent the main portrait style I have become known for. Even in my most recent work, I still see variations of this same basic shot, just different places and subjects. Sometimes with natural light, sometimes with studio lighting.

It's wide, with a basic rule of thirds composition. There is an element of his personality, which in this case adds an almost surreal aspect to the shot...

It's a bit alternative, as he is not looking at the camera, which gives it just a hint of a fly on the wall feel. Sometimes I do that, sometimes I don't.

Finally, I use an angular, busy background that I try to make go in and out of the frame to give the shot depth and movement, resulting in (what I hope) is a calm subject in the eye of the storm feel to my portraits.

I've thought about this a lot and even started a thread on it a few years ago. I can't really pin point a single image that represents my style of photography. Maybe because my images are too shallow or maybe because I shoot such a wide variety of subject matter. I really prefer to think of myself from a photographic stand point as a documenter of life around me. I'm going to give it a bit more though and see if I can figure it out.

What a good idea for a thread!

Characterising myself in one shot isn't easy, but I suppose there are certain features common to most of my stuff. I tend to very simple and clean compositions - I don't like "messy", and so rarely do landscapes or busy street scenes. In other words, I like to be able to control all the compositional elements. People appear quite a lot in my pictures, but almost always they are just "props" in the composition.

This is one (not sure if I've posted it before) which is typical - it was from my London Underground project.

The girl was conceived as a rushed commuter looking at the poster in passing. The photographer (me) photographs a British girl looking at a poster about an exhibition about the British being photographed ... :cool:

But, it is clean, with no extraneous elements - just the girl and the poster. Maybe I'm just a control freak :D

I like to take older buildings and churches like the one below. I haven't managed to learn how to post on the forums and do the picture justice. It never looks anywhere near as good as the print but here is one of mine, Jeff

This one is the shadow of Mt Whitney from atop Mt Whitney at sunset.

Excellent thread, and I love what everyone has put up here as a representation of what they are about in shooting.

It really is difficult if not impossible to sum it up with one shot, but I think this one "February" more or less combines alot of what I'm about in the one image. . .including myself.

This is THE shot I'm known for. I love it, my friends love it, it's placed in contests, and been on this board awhile back. When I'm shooting landscape/nature shots, this is the kind of power I try to get.

Of course I also do a lot of motorsports, which is a wholly different beast. But I've yet to get an image from racing that so universally moves people.

I'm seeing each of you in all the shots which are all excellent not only for their photographic excellence but showing the inner souls of each.
I shoot a wide variety and don't know that I've developed a style but if all my images captured what this one does, it would be fine with me.

Nice shot. You see, that's the thing. There's a part of me that often breaks away from the style that I posted here. Much like your pic, I also really like using flat bgs with line and form elements. Also, symmetry from time to time...

Well our styles always had a lot in common. I try to shoot the kind of images I like to see, and I like seeing your images.

The backgrounds and geometric lines are what I love about illustration, often an organic form breaks up strong geometric lines. At the very least it creates visual interest and often times can be used to communicate more than the form would on its own.

Agreed. As I'm sure you know, I'm also a big fan of peek-a-boo cropping (I may have just made that term up, heh heh).

IOW, cropping as if you're behind a solid door with a small window viewing the scene. And so, elements of the scene's border will be severed.

It drives some people crazy. Another reason to do it...:D

This is tough to do. Wish I could have two shots. :) I have two different personalities when it comes to photography. One is out in nature trying to find a way to record in a two-dimensional rectangle a feeling of peace that I can't seem to put into words. The other is walking around downtown looking for things that never get a second look, but should. It's nature that got me started. So, here's a shot that comes closer to my goal than most.

I have given this a lot of thought since first seeing the post and making my first response. I'm still not sure I have a particular style. I do a variety of different types of photography sports, nature, macro and street just to name a few. But when I think about how I would prefer people to remember my work I think it comes down to my love of family and documenting the every day life and special events of those I love. With that in mind here is my contribution to this thread.

I love all of your styles and yes there are some up there I love more than others but I won't pick one out because each photo has its merits as does each photographer.

That sums it up for me. There are so many different styles on this board, and so many fantastic photographers that execute each one of them so well. You can see anything from a macro of dragonfly eyes to sunrise over the reflecting pools to run down country stores to Lewis Hamilton turning laps and SO much more. And all of them are amazing. That's true talent, and I love seeing all of it. Even if I don't shoot that style myself, I learn from it and appreciate what the photographer can do with it.

So you Greg. If any one on the board has developed a style over the last couple of years it is you and this one exemplifies it.
