World Photo Day - Your Shot

Some of us are signed up for World Photo Day which is today, June 1st and runs from midnight to midnight GMT. The idea of the project is that one image from each photographer is submitted to the project, and it should be of people in everyday life.

I haven't even done mine yet but will figure something out... Still have some time left. Let's see what everyone else has done for the project - reply with your image and the story behind it if you want to add that too. And check out the project's web site, there are some good shots already added.

Re: World Photo Day - Your Shot

OK, I'll go first. Looks like we're officially done with World Photo Day and I got my shot with an hour to spare. It wasn't looking too good earlier but this is something I've wanted to try for awhile anyway. This project gave me a reason to do it - I'm usually a little self concious shooting people I don't know (I know, so shoot them when they're running away...) but stood out in an open area with a long lens and tripod for a 1/2 hour and nobody cared.

It's not a portfolio piece but I'll probably go back and try shooting that again. Not sure I like the post processing on it either, but I was looking for almost a silhouette against the highlights on the water. I shot it in RAW too - I'm a convert! Here it helps because of the bit depth and having more options open for post processing - specifically levels. 12 bit capture is much closer to continuous tone than 8 bit. It's not half again as much, it's exponential.

    So... Anybody else?

Re: World Photo Day - Your Shot

Steve, I like your shot, and I understand how you feel about taking pics of people. Not my thing, but once I started, it was ok.

So here is my photo for today. It didn't turn out quite the way I was hoping, but I was running out of time, so this is what you get. I went to Madison after work and took a stroll down State Street in hopes of catching some street musicians. I got all the way down to the end of the street and on the UW campus (go Badgers) without any signs of street performers. So I strolled along the lake to see what was going on. A lot of people out enjoying the beautiful weather. I took a few shots here and there but nothing that really stood out to me. There was a sidewalk vendor selling his photography, so I stopped and took a look at that for a minute. I walked back up State Street, and I could hear the faint sound of music!!! I was delited to see, and listen to this string band play a few songs, while I snapped a few pics. It was a very bright sunny day, so I couldn't help but blow out the building in the BG... anyway, here is the image that I contributed to World Photo Day.

Re: World Photo Day - Your Shot

OK, this is the one I submitted.

I'm really glad I grabbed my camera last night and got shots of the play, because today I completely forgot to take my camera into the airport with me when we picked up the MIL. So at least I had a bunch of shots to choose from already on my card.

This is probably more interesting than anything I'd have gotten at the airport, anyway. Here is a viewpoint not a lot of people are privileged to have ... the view from the stage out towards the audience.

I shot this through a "doorknob hole" -- where the doorknob is going to be when set construction is finished. I found this perspective to be extremely interesting. I could get closer to my subject from a lower vantage point and still not be distracting.

I chose it despite the flare because I think it's the strongest compositionally of all the shots I took last night. I also think the flare almost adds to the backstage theatrical feel, don't you?

ps. This is "Fiddler on the Roof."

Re: World Photo Day - Your Shot

Michael, that's a very good street shot other than the blown out BG on the right. Not much you can do about things like that sometimes other than try it again on an overcast day. Of course in this case that wouldn't work... Good that you were thinking about possible subjects and it panned out.

Kelly, one of the first things I noticed about the shot was the flare from the light (and light itself) and I think it really adds to the image. It gives it more of a "back stage" feel. The audience is dark and doesn't really stand out, but when you look at the image you'll put it all together. Good choice of places to shoot from, it's a unique shot!

Thanks for playing - I checked their site a little yesterday to see what else was going on in the world but hopefully I'll get thru them all at some point.

Well I missed the deadline, but heck I never let that stop me before...

    So here goes.

I took this picture in St. Augustine last month. I had followed tihs couple all the way from the Bridge of the Lions almost to the fort. They had been holding hands and talking and laughing the whole way. You woulda' thought they were in thier 20's and just decovering love. It was a great experience.

Re: World Photo Day - Your Shot

I was under the impression that it was until midnight last night GMT, which translated to 7:00pm central time for me. I have noticed that there are more photos in the gallery now than there were last night tho, so maybe they are a little laxed on the rules. I have also noticed more than 1 photo being posted by the same photog.

Re: World Photo Day - Your Shot

I've noticed more than one shot from some people, one that probably wasn't taken yesterday and quite a few without people in them. The guidelines were for the shot to be taken on June 1st from 12:01 am to midnight GMT - which translates to 7:01pm on 5/31 to 7:00pm on 6/1 here in the Central Time Zone (daylight savings time). Move the times up one hour (8:00) for Eastern. The goal was to capture "a day in the life"...

There are some nice shots, and I'm only a little way thru it. Michael has several comments on his shot but I only have one... (thanks Michael!).

I noticed a lot of landscape shots without any people in them too. Some of them are very nice, but not what I was expecting from this project. Now I have to go check out the comments. You're welcome Steve

Re: World Photo Day - Your Shot

I just checked the website for any updates. The original time parameters still hold - June 1st until midnight - and posting until midnight tonight (June 2).

There is also a big red notice that so far 300 images have been removed because they have no people in them. Sooooooo - they are posting all of them, apparently going through them later - and removing the ones that do not meet criteria.

Hello all...after looking at everyones beautiful shots, I'm almost embarrassed to display my WPD post. Being my first "International" display...haha...I really didn't know what to do and was kind of shaken with the "recognizable" legal situation, so I decided to get my grandkids in their normal everyday poses...the one I chose is slightly fuzzy, but I liked the pose and the way she was looking at me...hehe...yeah...proud grandpa...I called it Grandpas Precious Little One...anyway...because of everyones support on this site...I found the courage to go ahead and post both here and on WPD...but...look out next year (if I can get my DSLR)...hehe...great shots everyone!!!!

What a sweet beautiful face! Wow! Thanks for sharing it with us. It may be a little "fuzzy" but who cares - we can all see how cute she is. She sure knows her grandpa. ;)
