    WNY Adventure - Newark

I went back to Western New York this past weekend for another round of adventures! Here's where I went Saturday Afternoon, Newark State School in Newark. This massive sprawling campus is made up of active and abandoned buildings so we had to watch our step. After a half hour waiting for two members of the group to find a way in, I found one, it was right in front of us the whole time anyways. This was just the Hillcrest Residence. Our group was too large to attempt others. I may have to go back to see the rest of the buildings.

This was what was called a "State School" sort of classified as a Institution for those with mental or physical disabilities. It was what parents did, they turned children with these disabilities over to the State (or Provence in my case) and they were locked away.

In Canada, in the 1970s they started the de-institutionalization scheme in which funding was poured into smaller organizations and group homes and large places like this shut down.

The two such insitutions in Canada that I've visited on my adventures are the Muskoka Regional Center and the Edgar Adult Occupational Center.

I've been in some abandoned houses - it's exciting and creepy all at the same time. Nice stuff, it's amazing how fast they start falling apart when they're not used.
