Kentucky Ice Storm- Ron Kruger, you OK

Ron, haven't seen a post lately just hoping your OK?

Ky. struggles with outages in ice storm aftermath

By ROGER ALFORD, AP – 9 hours ago

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — As hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians lingered in the dark nearly a week after an ice storm wrecked the state's power grid, National Guard troops prepared to go door-to-door to check on residents.

Utility crews worked feverishly to restore electricity amid the largest state power outage on record. Guardsmen cleared roads with chain saws and some residents bundled up for another night around a wood-burning stove, looking for any way possible to stay warm.

With more than 700,000 Kentucky homes and businesses still without electricity Saturday, the state was a long way from recovering after an ice storm left a swath of destruction throughout the nation's midsection.

Kentucky was the hardest-hit. Monday's icy wallop encrusted a large part of the state in a mantle so thick it shattered utility poles, toppled trees and drove thousands from frigid homes to shelters. Officials had previously reported that 607,000 Kentucky customers were without power, but later said that figure didn't include municipal utilities or rural electric cooperatives within the Tennessee Valley Authority system.

Meanwhile, officials told those still shivering in dark, unheated homes to seek safe refuge in motels and places with power or generators.

"Too many people are trying to tough it out at home," Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo said.

I'm one of the lucky ones here in the Bluegrass State. I never lost power. As of this morning still nearly 1/2 million without power and another cold wave headed our way. Newspaper said most should be back up by Tuesday but they were not factoring in additional problems.

Glad to here you're ok OT.

Well, if he's not hunkered down in survival mode I hope he has away to charge his camera batteries.
I'll bet the ice is beautiful providing he can stay warm.

Glad to hear you are ok OT, just hope Ron is okay too.

The irony of it all, today it was 105F. It's a bit warm here...

His part of the state got hit pretty hard, but most have power again. Would be nice if he would check in.

Re: Kentucky Ice Storm- Ron Kruger, you OK

Thanks for the concern. I just came back to life and internet access today. I've posted some pictures and a description of what it was like on the wildlife and nature thread.
I've never seen anything like it and really never imagined an ice storm could be so devestating and dangerous. This really was a life-threatening situation for at least the first week. Many are still without power and I know for a fact the utility companies are lying about how many are still without power.
I lived off the land in the mountains for a couple of years, so I never worried about my life, but my wife really had a hard time of it.

I'm glad to read you and your wife are OK Ron.
That must have been a once in a life time experience.

I'm looking forward to reading about your ordeal.

I was wondering where RK was, but somehow, stupidly, never connected the dots.

Very glad to hear you're okay, Ron.
