What do you charge for extra images?

I am trying to get my custom wedding prices set and was trying to figure out how you charge for extra images? I have heard anywhere from $2 per pic, to $10 per pic.... and also heard to do just a set price per 50 extra, 100 extra, etc........

Is there a 'rule' to go off of?

I don't do weddings anymore, but do some portraits from time to time. I have a set price per print, depending on the size. If they order a lot, I usually knock a little off the final price, but other wise, I stick to a set price per print.

I have a set print price.... but most of my clients get their images digitally on a disc...

Maybe I'm confused as to what you're asking?

Are you talking about extra photos on a disc? For example, you're package price may include a CD with 300 photos on it for $XXX, but if they client want's 400 photos, what do you charge for the extra 100?

Or are you talking about prints? So maybe your package includes five 8x10's and the client wants 10?

Exactly.

set your base price, what you need to make for each wedding, and don't nickle and dime the extra images.

Especially now, with the whole economic disaster being broadcast everywhere you look, people are watching what they spend.

If you say $500 for a disc of 300 images, and then $2 per image for each one over that 300, people are going to be turned off by that, or never go over the 300, even if they want more. it also opens the door for "well we only really want about 50 of those images, so we shouldn't have to pay the full amount.

One set price, regardless of the number of images takes away any negotiating or questions. Plus, you can get paid up front, which is always better. And, if money is tight, people aren't going to feel like they have to cut photos out to save money. And if they feel like they have to choose less than they want because they can't afford more, it will be your fault (doesn't matter that they should budget for what they need, you are the mean photog holding thier images hostage).

My felling is you charge for taking the photos, the number of photos is a mute point. You give them a complete set of photos on a CD. But I've seen the resolutions on the CD any where from 400 by 600 pixels to full resolution digital. The photographers which give the low resolution CD's expect the client to order 8 by 10 or larger prints and make most of there money there at 10 to 20 bucks a print.

I prefer not to work with prints. I do if requested but prefer to give my clients high resolution disks where they can get their own images printed and I don't feel like I am ripping them off.(I do tell them there is a quality difference, etc. but most people don't really care that much) I charge less then most in my area for prints and I know I could charge more but I don't feel it is right to over triple the rate I get charged for a print. I still make a profit but I also get a name around for being more fair to my clients.
