    Well, I'm bummed. 70-200 f2.8L IS toasted

My favorite workhorse lens is now officially deceased. It was giving me the Err 01 intermittently. Yesterday while on an afternoon hike to take pictures for Almo's limited project, it refused to come to life no matter what I did. Just the same old 00 aperture reading, no focusing, nothing, and of course the Err 01 everytime I clicked the shutter. Just dug up my warranty card and reciept, box and it will ship out Tuesday for Canon USA in southern California. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhh

clean lens and body contacts. And it may not be the lens, try it on another body before shipping it off. Mine won't auto focus but manually focus's fine. Turns out the auto focus needs adjusted on the body.

Done all that too. tried different batteries, different switch combos. Nothin'. Works fine on my D60 and 10D, but dead on my 1D mkII. All my other lenses work fine on all bodies, but just my IS lens and 1D ii. I tracked down a couple of threads on other sites where others had same problema. Don't know why this would happen after a year without incident. Nothing seems loose, the contacts have been cleaned over and over. I routinely clean the bodies and lenses monthly, including contacts and sensors. The only thing I can come up with is a faulty IS unit on the lens. It's aggravating because one of my business partners was counting on using this body/lens combo next weekend for his daughter's basketball tourney, and of course, it's my main workhorse lens.

    Your lens won't AF?

Get that fixed JS. The AF ability of the 70-200 f2.8L is one of the things that made this lens legendary over a decade ago. It was no brainer for me when I put it on my EOS-1V HS years ago in the store. Just a few shots trying it out, and that was that. I pulled out my checkbook and shook in my booties while I wrote out a $1600 check for the lens. Now it's about $1000 brand new because of the IS version, but I would buy this lens again if there were no IS.
Get that AF problem fixed-you will be amazed at the stop action shots waiting for you.

That seems really ODD that it works on every body but the MKII. I personally think it may be that MKII that is the problem, not the lens.

Let your buddy use the 10D / 70-200 , then send the MKII/ 70-200 to CANON when he has shot the images IF the problem is ONLY with YOUR MKII/ 70-200IS, then the way for them to 100% find the problem is with YOUR SETUP ;)

    update on 70-200 f2.8L IS

It is now officially totally dead. No response on ANY camera. 10D, D30, D60, 1D ii-all are now registering the 00 aperture and Err 01 on shutter click. I've tried every CF and SD card, reformatted them, new batteries, recharged batteries. Nada. It was working for a while on the other cameras, then the D60 started showing symptoms, went dead, then all went dead after that. I noticed the image in the view finder would JUMP, accompanied by a strange mechanical noise, then the Err 01 would ensue. I hope they can fix this right the first time. Last time I sent in anything to USA Canon, they really screwed things up (color balance on the D30), even after three repairs, so I'm not eager to send in my prize lens, but I can't use it in any mode anyway since the cameras won't talk aperture to the lens. Time to look on e-bay for a used 70-200 f2.8L non-IS for backup.

It's NOT the lens, it IS a problem with the MKII. If it works on other bodies but not on the MK II that should tell you it's the body not the lens.

** I have heard there is a possible issue between the 70-200 and the MK II so check into that as well.

In my case it is a body problem. Canon CPS checked it out at Brickyard 400. It will focus fine manually but not AF.
I'd love to get it fixed but:
    1: $90 shipping each way
    2: $180 to "fix"
3: too much to shoot and not have the body for 4-6 weeks while it sits on a shelf for a 5 minute repair
4: I send it in I don't work til it comes back (hopefully repaired). can't afford to not work with these gas prices....come to think of it I can't afford to get to work

Thanks for the offer Paul. I don't have a Nikon body, and if I did, I might end up converting (oh heresy of heresies) to being a Nikon Samurai.
